Description Paolo Borelli 2003-01-21 12:05:51 UTC
At the moment (Evolution 1.2) when I select more than one mail (for example
holding the SHIFT key) the display pane becomes empty.
I'd like the behaviour to change and show the contents of the latest
selected mail; This way you can quickly go through the incoming mail list
and look at the contents of each email using the SHIFT + UP key
combination, ening up with all the messages selected and ready to be
deleted by just pressing DEL.
I got used to this behaviour in a windows client (not Outlook) and I think
it's useful to keep your incoming mail under control when you're subscribed
to some high-traffic mailing lists where you're not interested to every
message.

pretty sure our UI people disagreed with this (the way you are
requesting it work I think was the way it originally worked, but that
it was inconsistant with the way other list-widgets worked).

that said, the change needs to be made in etable, not the mailer.

Hi Guys.

Hmm! For the record, I've never commented on (or even considered,
really) this issue before. Jeff may have been thinking of another
issue, or perhaps of someone else's comments. :) It would be nice to
know the history of the removal of this option, if indeed it did once
exist and was removed. I'll ask around and comment again when I have
more data.

At any rate:
I spent a few minutes now playing with a mailing list as described
above, and have to say that the proposed behavior sounds very
reasonable to me. Given that it reduces the amount of work necessary
for the user to read-messages-and-mark-them-as-deleted, it seems like
a positive change.

Mike: am I missing some reason why this change is not advisable? The
only possible problem I can come up with concerning it is that perhaps
people would become confused about exactly which of multiple selected
messages was being displayed... (though if you are awake whilst
reading your mail, this seems unlikely.)

best,
Anna

The main issue that I see is that the preview is not accurately
displaying the state of the frame. If I hit the delete button, I am
deleting multiple messages in this state. Showing an individual
message could make it seem to me that I'm only deleting that message,
especially if the multiple selections are out of view in the message
list's scrolled pane. The lack of a visible message is actually a cue
to the overall state of the frame.
Comment 4 Paolo Borelli 2003-01-21 19:53:13 UTC
I understand your point, OTOH it seems pretty unlikely that one select
multiple message without being aware and the selected messages are
not visible in the scrolled list.

What about having a confirmation dialog for the deletion of multiple
messages, just to be safe? pressing DEL one time and ENTER to confirm
would still be better then hitting DEL for all the messages :)

Comment 9 André Klapper 2009-11-08 16:12:01 UTC
This report has not seen any changes or updates for more than 3 years.

Also, GAL was merged into Evolution in June 2005. Actual GAL bugs are now located in the Product "Evolution", component "GAL". The external, separate GAL codebase will not receive any changes.

We kindly ask you to check whether the issue you have reported here still happens in GNOME 2.26 or 2.28.
If so, please update this report by adding a short comment, removing the NEEDINFO state, updating the "Version" field and moving this to the Evolution product (if you have sufficient Bugzilla rights to do so).

Again thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be handled for the version you originally used here.

Closing as per last comment. Feel free to reopen and move this to Evolution if it is still valid.
