"Welcome to Evolution" email should be localized through po file

This should be important for 1.0, I'd think.
IS this part of the string freeze/translator job? Maybe we dont have time for htis now? We dont have a mechanism for loading different locale default user data either ...? This isn't really a mailer issue, its more a shell issue as it handles/installs the default user data, and will need the mechanism. Also of course a translator issue.

Will you accept a patch if I prepare it tomorrow/this weekend?
I am a bit scared of breaking the shell... But if you send me a working patch by tomorrow, I can get it in. (Please send it by mail, I might forget to look at the bug on bugzilla.)

No patch attached, atleast not yet. I changed version to 1.1.0.99, target to Future and priority to wishlist. It seems that there's no hurry with this. ;)
still in 2.0, fyi thunderbird 0.8 has this (not meant offending).
It is possible to do this in 2.0, just that it hasn't been translated by anyone. Maybe it wasn't clear to the translators?

It's now localized (at least for zh_CN).
From the new README.translators: Evolution is translated like most GNOME projects, by updating the the .po files in evolution/po and by translating the help files in evolution/help/C and placing them in a locale specific dir, ie evolution/help/fr. In addition, the default welcome message is in evolution/mail/default/C/Inbox and can be tranlated by translating the message in the file and also putting it in a locale specific dir, ie evolution/mail/default/fr/Inbox. The file name 'Inbox' should not be changed, as this is an internally defined string (the name in the folder list will still be translated though).
Would it be possible to somehow allow the string contents of the welcome mail be translated through the Evolution po file? I.e. somehow the string contents could be stored in a file that intltool could grok, and a way for the po translations to be used to produce localized mails automatically at build time. With the current solution, the question is not *if* but *when* the hard-coded translations will be forgotten, unmaintained, and out-of-date, since these translations currently need to be handled out of process with no translation tracking tool support whatsoever.
Doing this would complicate matters I think, since then we'd have to construct the mailbox at runtime.
JP, actually not. You should build them at build-time instead. I've discussed some proposals in http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2004-December/msg00112.html intltool route should be simplest for you, and shouldn't be too hard for me. What do you think about such approach?
...would be nice by the way to change the date of all the welcome messages from "25 June 2002 14:45:00" to something current, else the user thinks "this software is already more than two years old?!"... :-)
Would be nice to get that fixed in the next development cycle. But for now the "New Features" section needs an update. And please not 10 minutes before release so that we are able to translate this... ;) Perhaps a small note on gnome-i18n list after the change.

Tidying, this is actually a mailer issue since 2.0/2.2
since localization of the welcome message has been done now, could the same please be done by also making it possible to localize the quick reference? i filed bug 307856 about that, perhaps it's just a bit of copy&paste of code (don't know). ;-)

btw this requires code actually, so reassigning.
sigh. we just cannot expect translators to be developers! we currently ask people to translate a crappy mbox file with embarassing html, to copy and adjust a Makefile, to add their language code to the Makefile in the directory above and to add a line about their adjusted Makefile to configure.in. this is ridiculous. this is not the work of translators. not at all. it's more than clear that stuff has to go wrong and break the build. perhaps i shouldn't have asked on gnome-i18n to translate the welcome message. on the other hand, it's bad to have an english message. and an english, non-translated quick reference pdf. boy oh boy, this sucks.
Andre, please look at comment #15 and referenced e-mail. I'd be willing to work on that in intltool, and I think that would be ideal solution: you'd need only to change a few things in your build system, and entire message would be translatable through evolution PO files. Naturally, I don't plan to invest my time on this if it's not actually going to be used (which is why I didn't start on it so far).
danilo, i'm not a hacker, so it wouldn't be me changing a few things in evolution's build system. seems like i need to convince a few people...

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).
