- Invoke gnome-terminal
- Press ALT+F
- Press 'p'
- New Profile dialog box is displayed.
- Close the dialog.
- Click once on 'File' menu, to get a drop down of the menu. Make sure the
  focus stays on 'File'.
- Press 'p'
- The new profile dialog box is not displayed.

Hrm. happens in gedit and yelp, as well, but not evolution; I'm betting this is
a gtk 2.6 problem. Can someone over there take a look at it?

This is not a new problem. GTK+ has always resolved mnemonics wrt to the
currently  active menu shell, which is the menubar in this case. Note that bug
89336 has a patch to make this work as you want, by trying to resolve mnemonics
in the open submenu if they are not found in the menubar.
