When changing which desktop you are viewing, an on-screen indicator of
which desktop you are on appears.

When moving a window between desktops, no on-screen indicator appears
though it seems even more important in this situation. For example, moving
a maximized window between desktops will obscure the rest of the desktop so
you can't be certain which one you are on.

I had a hard time finding this bug; to make it easier to find in searches, I'm adding Sven's description of the problem which has the words I'm more likely to use in search (workspace and preview):

"When I move windows between workspaces it would be useful to have the same
preview as when switching workspaces."

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
