GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 130497
[UI-REVIEW] Change menu-item name/tooltip and window title
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
[ Note: the version of gucharmap in Debian I'm using does not have a menu item tooltip at all and has "Unicode Character Map" both as the title of the menu entry and the window. ] As for the menu-item and window title ("Unicode Character Map"), I think they should be changed to just "Character Map". The HIG says[1]: "Do not include technical details when the user does not need to know them, or can infer them from context. Avoid technical jargon unless the application is to be used only by a technical audience." [ Following the HIG to the letter, the title should actually be "ApplicationName FunctionalDescription" ... however, in the case of accessories this seems to conflict both with common sense and current practice :) ] As for the tooltip, I think it should say something like "Select special characters to paste them into your documents", though I'm not a native english speaker and perhaps someone else can come up with something better and perhaps slightly shorter. * gucharmap.desktop.in: * gucharmap/gucharmap-window.c: * gucharmap/imgucharmap.c: s/Unicode Character Map/Character Map/g (#130497, Lars Weber) I'm closing this bug although I didn't set the tooltip text. I'm not really happy with your suggestion. Please feel free to open another bug and perhaps solicit suggestions from other usability folks.
Opened a new bug (#130614) for the tooltip.
