GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 749295
Regression: no longer possible to disable temporarily notifications (easily)
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:32:03 UTC
With GNOME 3.14, there was an on/off switch in the message tray to disable temporarily notifications. With GNOME 3.16, I must go to the gnome-control-center -> notifications, which is not convenient. But it is not just about the number of clicks to reach the on/off switch, it is also about seeing quickly whether I've disabled notifications or not. The on/off switch in the GNOME 3.14 message tray was also an _indication_. In my opinion it's an important feature for a distraction-free desktop. For me it's a regression.
For what it's worth, the functionality is still there (use the org.gnome.SessionManager.Presence.SetStatus DBus method to set the session status to busy), but not exposed in UI - while we liked the functionality as well, it would have been stupid to keep the entire message tray around just to keep the switch, and there haven't been any convincing UI alternatives so far. So this is mostly a design issue - once we get a good place to put back that UI, we will add it back.
Why not in the bottom left of the calendar/notifications popover? If the On/Off switch is too big and out of place, maybe a checkbutton is better, dunno.
There is already an extension for this: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/964/do-not-disturb-button/

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
