Debian-generated software version info

I normally run my desktop at a 2560x1440 resolution, and at that size, the overview functionality works as expected. When I switch my screen resolution to 1024x768, however, the overview screen "wobbles" in a way that makes it barely usable. This has first occurred as I upgraded to 3.12. I've attached a summary of the versions of gnome-shell and its dependencies.

I've recorded a screencast of the phenomenon, here:

http://tiker.net/tmp/gnome-shell-wobble.webm

Note that Firefox takes some convincing to play the video, but Chrome/Chromium plays it fine. (There appears to be some issue with the initial seconds.)

I just observed that this is intermittent--it won't *always* happen, but perhaps in 50% of cases.

Hello,

Same here with 1366x768 resolution under stock Fedora 20 (gnome-shell 3.10) since the upgrade from Fedora 19 (gnome-shell 3.8).

Nothing to add, your screencast describe perfectly what happens.

My two cents: this phenomenon make me think that the screen size used by gnome is more higher than real display height, but it's only a feeling.

For my part this happens always (not intermittent) but with more or less amplitude. It depends on the number of application window opened.

Cordially,

Do you have any extensions running? If you do can you try disabling them for a while and see if it reproduces?
Comment 4 Piece_Maker 2014-05-14 17:30:34 UTC
Hi, I have the same bug though unlike the above, I only get it with 3.12 (Upgraded from a non-bugged 3.10 on Arch).

To me it seems the screen size is higher (As the windows go below the screen level) Though the messaging tray still works where expected.

I've tried doing things such as clearing all my gnome configs (and extensions), clearing Xorg configs, and falling-back to 'stock' themeing.

I have a screencast to add but haven't been able to upload yet, I will reply with it when possible!

According to gnome-tweak-tool and extensions.gnome.org website, the only extensions running are:
- drive removable menu;
- gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet
  (https://github.com/paradoxxxzero/gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet).

I'll try as soon as possible to disable them, and let you know the result.

Cordially,

i am seeing this with 1280x1024 resolution, so not sure if this is really limited to low-res screens
Comment 9 Jozef Riha 2014-06-18 17:44:34 UTC
i discovered by trial and error that this issue directly connected (at least in my case) to the number of *desktop files (system+user location) gnome is parsing. seems that the total number of *desktop app-type w/o NoDisplay=true attribute for resolution of 1280x1024 is 320 (16x20). please try reducing number of the files in searched directories (e. g. by moving to a temp directory) and see if this helps.

I tried your fix (moved enough .desktop files that only 16 pages of apps show up in the app drawer, assuming that's what you meant!) And I still get the same issue as described. Well, half way, anyway. The apps drawer still clips off the bottom of the screen, but at least now the window-spread overview doesn't.
