Missing "delete" action in context menu (151.52 KB, image/png)

I'm not exactly sure whether this is a nautilus problem or whether gvfs-mtp is the culprit here. Feel free to categorize this as needed.

For the "normal" file system the "Ctrl+Del" key combination will delete a file (or move it into the bin). This doesn't work for MTP connected devices, though. I can delete files using the entry in the contect menu just perfectly fine, so it is quite surprising (and annoying (!)) that the appropriate short cut won't work.

Indeed. What is writen in the context menu entry? "Move to Trash"?

No, the context entry is called "Delete" (actually "Löschen" as its translated to German) on the MTP device, whereas it is called "Move to trash" on the real filesystem. Seems to be an inconsistency.

Can/Will this be fixed?

Ok, that explains it. Ctrl + Delete is the shortcut for "Move to Trash", not for permanently deleting files. That's Shift + Delete.

In this sense, this is right, because it would be inconsistent for Ctrl + Delete to permanently delete a file when moving to Trash is not supported by the backend. There would be a danger of unexpected data loss.

On the other hand, this is still an UX bug: users trying to use the Ctrl + Delete shortcut should get some kind of result or feedback.

In my opinion, either it should be made possible to move to Trash, or there should be a notification/dialog telling the user that moving to Trash is not supported for this device and suggesting to permanently delete the file.

Thanks for your clarification. Makes sense so far.

I would second this motion.

Missing "delete" action in context menu

Additionally, there is no "delete" action in the context menu. (Obviously, there is also no "Move to trash").

That is fixed in 3.16.2, was a regresion on 3.16.

In the mean time, this bug was fixed ( commit 89a11adc55d8bcf9ba01243c7f5f177398e5f582 )

Now, if Trash is not supported (example: MTP mount), there is a "Delete permanently" action in the context menu and the [Delete] key will ask to delete file permanently.

If this is not working as expected in recent versions, please report again.
