Description Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-02-26 00:31:27 UTC
I love gnome, but the logout UI is horrible. Could we perhaps replace it
with something, gasp, similar to the winXP logout prompt. If you are
unfamiliar with the winXP logout prompt, here's my ascii drawing of it, or
more appropiately how'd i'd like to see it in gnome.

 ------------------------------------------
| _ |
| |_| Save Current Setup |
| |
| -------- ----------- --------- |
| | | | | | | |
| | Cancel | | New Login | | Log Out | |
| | | | | | | |
| --------- ----------- --------- |
| |
 ------------------------------------------

Just so you can understand this design a bit better, here are some other
bugs i've filed related to the logout dialog.
#72596 - logout action should be divided into logout action and
shutdown/restart action
#72598 - Logout action should give users the option of a new login

This design is much clearer than our existing design (it's actually one of
the only UI things i like in winXP). It associates a button with a specific
action as oppose to making a choice from a set of radio buttons and than
hitting yes, no or help. I just think it's much clearer and cleaner.

ok, if you choose logout you return to the login screen of gdm. If you
choose new login you end up where, the same place? or you just relogin
with the same user automatically?

New login is probably bad terminology. In winXP you can login as
another user without logging out of your current session. This is
trivial to implement in X, and the option is actually included with
the current version of ximian gnome in the system menu. I think this
is a cool feature that we get for free with X. Theres a bug 72598
that requests this feature be added to the logout dialog.
