Description Chris Bainbridge 2014-03-10 04:27:19 UTC
I am running 0.9.8.4-1 on Debian jessie, using Broadcom b43 wifi. It appears to be possible for nm-applet to get into a state where it shows wifi networks only as being "disconnected" (none available) and there is no way (from the gui) to list networks or reconnect to a network. This seems to be rare but is an annoying ui failure. I have had it happen twice, logs/notes follow.

---
After a while the network stops working. The network manager applet shows a little cross icon, hovering over it shows "No network connection". Clicking, under "Wi-Fi Networks" it just says "disconnected"
No networks are listed as available. There does not appear to be any way to re-connect to a wifi network using the applet.

It appears NetworkManager put the device through states activated -> failed -> disconected. What happened here? It disconnected the wifi device?

# nmcli nm status
RUNNING STATE WIFI-HARDWARE WIFI WWAN-HARDWARE WWAN
running disconnected enabled enabled enabled disabled

"nmcli con up uuid ..." successfully brought the connection back up and the applet showed connection as expected.

---
It happened again.

nm-applet shows no network connection, under "Wi-Fi networks" it just says
"disconnected".

# nmcli nm status
RUNNING STATE WIFI-HARDWARE WIFI WWAN-HARDWARE
WWAN
running disconnected enabled enabled enabled
disabled

# iwlist wlan0 scan

the scan seemed to kick network manager back to life, and it reconects to a
network.

I think I have seen this state a couple of times as well recently. I'm now using nm-applet from git and will see whether it can still happen.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being shut down in favor of a GitLab instance.
We are closing all old bug reports and feature requests in GNOME Bugzilla which have not seen updates for a long time.

If you still use NetworkManager and if you still see this bug / want this feature in a recent and supported version of NetworkManager, then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/-/issues/

Thank you for creating this report and we are sorry it could not be implemented (workforce and time is unfortunately limited).
