GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 710956
Removal of key features
Last modified: 2013-10-27 10:41:09 UTC
Nautilus Pre 3.4 release had so many features that made it such an amazing file manager to use. But post 3.4, features have been removed? Why? I've even forgotten which features have not made it to the file manager now. The one i miss the most is the 2 pane feature. Atleast please bring that back :) Thanks and have a nice day :)
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Indeed, from 3.4 to 3.6, nautilus underwent a major evolution, in which some features had to be cut to make room for improvements to other features and introduction of new ones. But the functionality of the removed options was not lost, because developers made sure it was made preserved in another form. Such was the case of 2 panes. Gnome-shell now provides an easy way to place 2 windows side by side by dragging them to the right and left edges of the screen. The result is very similar to the old 2 panes. But the 2 panes feature also included the "Move/copy to other pane" action, whose functionality was preserved and augmented in the form of the new "Move/copy to..." action. And for some purposes you can still use 2 tabs instead of 2 panes. For further explanation, please read what I already wrote in bug 696880. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 696880 ***
Thanks for replying so quickly :) First, I'm sorry to report a bug that has already been reported. Second, I did see the move to or copy to on the right click. I use a laptop, and i think we can generally agree that a mouse is better than a touchpad. Unfortunately, right now, i cant get the wireless mouse i need right now. On my touchpad, or even with the mouse, its a bit cumbersome to go to the path right-click the file(or folder) you want to copy or move than a keyboard. It does interrupt the workflow somewhat, especially if one is in tearing hurry and by mistake moves the file or the folder instead of copying it. This is where the extra pane feature came on really handy. I need not remove my hand from the keyboard, navigate to the file with my touchpad and copy or move it. I use unity which is very keyboard centric, something i prefer. I feel its better to keep the extra pane feature with the set of options thats given by default. Its entirely my opinion and we may or may not agree on it. The only question i have now is if there is any plans to bring back the extra pane feature as it was previously in the later releases of nautilus or is there any workaround that i can use(Other than installing and using the patch to bring back extra pane as this makes Nautilus look really hideous. Its hurting my eye!! ;P) to bring back the extra pane. Have a nice day :)
