Some work was done on this in bug 681469, but it wasn't finished before the rest of the gstreamer 1.0 port was pushed to master.

With that and a few other recent commits it works reasonably well with the crossfading backend, not so well with the playbin backend. I'm fairly sure the remaining problems are in GStreamer so I'm closing this.

I don't have much to report yet, just that if I set the playbin flags to enable visualization while already playing, playback stops. It works if the flags are set before playback starts.

Ah, right, I think there are some (long-standing) bugs about that.
