Gimp 2.8 has some spin buttons that may be reusable as a basis for the memory/disk settings, see the left pane on http://static.arstechnica.net/2012/05/06/singlewindow-4fa6e7b-intro.png
Maybe they are not appropriate, but better to think about it before reinventing the wheel ;)

Not a duplicate in its strictest meaning, but when bug #678123 is fixed, this bug does not need to stay open.
