Description Linas 2012-04-24 17:38:29 UTC
(Seems a previous instance didn't get through, reporting again)

The width of the lateral panel cannot be reduced.
For the sake of details, I'm pointing several buggy behaviors related to this, as they seem produced by the same code.

Suppose I open the lateral panel to view the miniatures. It opens with an inner width of 240px, despite the fact the thumbnailed page is only 100px width (Bug #1), which is why I'd like to stretch it. This was possible in 3.3 but now you can't. (Bug #2)

You can however resize it making it wider. The thumbnails still show in a single column, with the new space blank. The thumbnails are not positioned in several columns taking that space until you move the scrollbar (Bug #3).

Before you get multi-column thumbnails, you could take that blank space back. After it is showing several columns, you can't reduce it to place it into single-column again (Bug #4). The only way seems to be to close and reopen evince.

Changing to another type of lateral panel (Annotations, Bookmarks...), you still can't reduce it, despite the lateral panel now being empty (eg. no bookmarks). (Bug #5)

The minimum size of the sidebar is determined by the label on top of the sidebar.

This would be fixed if we move the sidebar selector to the toolbar as I proposed in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=510686#c12

Running Mint 16 with Evince 3.6.1 (latest in repositories). Very annoying that I cannot reduce the width of the page preview side pane. Wastes a lot of space. This used to be possible in earlier releases. The minimum width allowed appears to be about 460 pixels, whereas the thumbnails images themselves are 104 pixels wide (I realize that a small amount of border will need to be added)

^- Linux Mint 16, kernel 3.11.0-19-generic, Evince 3.6.1

Borderline unusable on a 1024x768 screen, pretty poor on the dual 1920x1080 screens on work PC.

This has been around so long now I have solved it by installing qpdfview instead. I do appreciate all the volunteers who work on gnome and evince but bugs cannot be left indefinitely.

There have been several changes that reduced the size of the sidebar, most recently bug 778000, where the buttons on the bookmarks tab were changed to + and - instead of Add and Remove. The sidebar in Evince version 3.27.91 can be made much smaller than the screenshot and screencast show.
