I'm sitting here reading stuff on my laptop after I turned on the "dim screen to save power" thing that I had apparently turned off at some point. It is really drawing a lot of attention to itself and is pretty distracting. I think this is partly due to the fact that the change is discontinuous and abrupt.

Most laptops only have 8 or 16 brightness states that can be set in the hardware.

I think we can consider this obsolete. This will happen for free if
