Description Benjamin Kerensa 2011-11-27 04:34:03 UTC
In Gnome3 we noticed that proxy profiles are no longer included in network proxy settings. Supposedly this is a bug as such we are passing this upstream for handling.

I am also affected by this and feel this is a serious regression.
I often have to change the system proxy two or three times a day and I had around 30 different profiles configured (different network environments at customer sites).
With the current control center network app it is not even possible to use the same proxy for all protocols without re-entering the settings for every single protocol. I am really sorry I have to say that this is ridiculous.

The previous way of configuring the proxy settings by choosing a profile from a dropdown list was not perfect but met the requirements of a mobile user with the need to connect to a lot of different networks.

I have attached one screenshot of the current network config app showing a list with a mixture of different types of network settings (IP & connection settings for different adapters, VPN connections, Proxy Settings) and one screenshot showing the current desktop background config app. There you can see a dropdown to select different sources for the background picture.
My suggestion is to place such a dropdown above the list for the network config to select three categories:
  * Adapters
  * VPN connections
  * Proxy settings

That way it would be easy to configure lots of proxy profiles or VPN connections.

Please make this happen as the usability of gnome based desktops in production business environments would IMHO profit from changes like this one!

Please insert a profile choose menu with multiple proxy profile, including authentication for each different proxy. This is a really important feature and a regression too.

I'm seeing this on fedora too. Massive regression from Gnome 2.x

Also, there's nowhere to add domains to ignore when using the proxy.

Having moved back to another location after needing a proxy[1] I then had to turn off the proxy settings.

Surely proxy settings should be handled within Network Manager as they are only relevant to the connection being used. This might need some tweaking for wired connections (a prompt on which proxy to use if proxies have been specified, although a little IP range comparison might make this work 'magically') but for wireless connections is should be far more obvious?

[1] and authentication, which shouldn't be requested by the web browsers - surely web based access is ubiquitous to the whole OS and needs to be authenticated as part of the proxy settings, but that's an aside.

This is going to be implemented as per-connection proxies, which solves 99% of the use cases in a nicer and more automatic way than having to switch profiles by hand.
