Screenshot of the applications view

The highlight effect that is displayed under application launchers in the dash and applications view is not visually distinct enough. Sometimes people do not notice it.

This issue has been reported several times by users, and has been discussed on #gnome-design.

Screenshot attached for reference.

Screenshots are boring, give us mockups!

Possible solution

Attaching a screenshot of a quick style-hack - is that more or less what you had in mind?

Do you have your dash on the right side? Then I think the line might stay better to the right of the icon. Analogously when the dash is on the left.

Not really, I was just debugging an RTL issue and was too lazy to switch to my normal locale to take the screenshot :-)

Mmmh, not sure - having it at the bottom effectively underlines the icon (which is a common mean for emphasizing) and goes well with the glow. Not saying the it can't be moved to the side, but at least to me it looks a tad bit odd.

Design input?

bit of shell mockups

Jakub's gnome-shell mockups already use a thin border at the bottom of apps in the dash, I guess it's just not implemented yet.

Look good and might just work!

It seems that, in comparison to the current implementation, the center of the radial gradient is 1-2 pixels above the line, right? That also helps (besides the underline).

patch against 3.0.1

Here's a one liner + the svg used for the border, there is something weird in shell about borders there though.
Comment 9 Gordon Messmer 2011-06-01 00:23:41 UTC
The existing highlight might work if it was rotated to "rest" against the same screen edge as the dash and were made slightly larger (fill some of the margin currently between icons). Subjectively, it looks kind of weird to have a highlight with a flat bottom that's floating.
