Description Celcero 2011-03-20 00:06:15 UTC
I run gnucash 2.4.4 on Win 7 x 64 and any reports features can be used. The tab/window report open a full blank screen : nothings ( no data) to see and nothings to print. The bug is the same with every types of reports.
What's the problem and of course the solution ? Is someone had the same bug on Win 7 x 32 ?
Comment 1 physiowong 2011-03-21 13:46:09 UTC
Yes, I have the problem.
Comment 2 Ian K 2011-03-27 18:32:03 UTC
I have installed GnuCash 2.4.4 over the top of 2.4.3 on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and reports are working on my system.
Comment 3 Geert Janssens 2011-04-06 16:47:18 UTC
Can you attach the trace file after you try to open a report ? See http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Windows#Error_messages.2C_Trace_file to learn where you can find the trace file.

With Windows XP(Home)SP3,I have the same problem. The Reports feature in Version 2.2.9 works O.K.
Comment 5 Geert Janssens 2011-04-26 18:34:49 UTC
I'll ask again as in comment 3 : anyone having this problem, can you attach the trace file gnucash generates after you try to open a report ? See
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Windows#Error_messages.2C_Trace_file to learn
where you can find the trace file. There will probably be several trace files. If that confuses you, just delete all the trace files and run your gnucash test again. The one trace file that will be generated will be a good one for this bug report.

Trace file re GnuCash Version 2.4.5.

This trace file must have been made before I uninstalled Version 2.4.5.
Comment 8 Geert Janssens 2011-08-24 09:13:38 UTC
I'm afraid this trace file doesn't contain any useful information regarding
this bug. Perhaps this trace file is from a gnucash run in which you didn't
have a report open ?

Can you try again:
- Start GnuCash
- Open a report
- Quit GnuCash
- Attach the most recent trace file to this bug.

Thank you.

And for the record, I have installed GnuCash 2.4.6 on my Windows test system
and the reports seem to work fine. So we need to figure out why it's not
working on your system.
Comment 9 turtlbrdr 2011-09-14 22:11:59 UTC
I am also encountering this bug. I am using window 7 64-bit, running Gnucash 2.4.7.

I will attach a trace file as well

Comment 11 Geert Janssens 2011-10-14 18:07:57 UTC
Could this be a duplicate of bug 657909 ?

Can you try to
- open a report (which shows up blank),
- export the report to html (third button from the right on the toolbar when the report is in front of you)
- open the exported html file in your browser

Do you see the report in your browser ?
Comment 12 turtlbrdr 2011-10-14 19:03:09 UTC
I can indeed see the report once it is exported to html.

Interestingly, there is also anther quandary added to this. In addition to the Asus G73jh I am running right now. I also have a netbook (Asus EEE PC 1015PE).

I tried opening reports on the netbook and I was surprised to find that all of them WORKED. Besides obvious size diffences the only diffence between them would be that my G73jh (the one I am having problems with) is running a 64bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, the netbook is running a 32bit version of Windows 7 Starter.

I don't know your code for the application, but could the problem be due to issues with a 64bit OS?

I will provide additional information as needed.
Comment 13 Geert Janssens 2011-10-14 20:16:58 UTC
*** Bug 657909 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 14 Geert Janssens 2011-10-14 20:20:00 UTC
Since this report is the oldest one, I have marked 657909 as a duplicate of this one.

To all that have commented so far on this bug or any of the duplicates, can you report your full Windows version, to see if the problem is limited to some versions only or not.

So please report something like
Windows 7 Home Premium, 32bit
or
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit
or something like that.

Thanks
Comment 15 turtlbrdr 2011-10-14 21:20:48 UTC
The PC that is having the reports issues is running:

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit (Service pack 1 is NOT installed, but planned for later today)

The PC that is not having an issue is running:
Windows 7 Starter, 32bit with service pack 1
Comment 16 turtlbrdr 2011-10-15 05:53:15 UTC
I do have an update now. Since my last post I have updated my main PC to service pack 1 so now my computer running Windows Home Premium is now up to date.

After updating my computer, I still have had NO change in gnucash's ability to render a report. The computer still will not show the report.
Comment 17 Geert Janssens 2011-10-29 08:57:02 UTC
I'm referring to a list thread on the same problem:
http://gnucash.1415818.n4.nabble.com/Reports-not-showing-td3656128.html

Which suggests other people are experiencing this as well, but some report that only a few reports aren't working.

The common element seems to be though that almost all of the reporters are running a 64-bit variant of Windows.

Only comment 1 on this bug could be interpreted as someone maybe a 32-bit issue and in the bugs marked as duplicate, nobody actually mentioned 32-bit or 64-bit so we don't know.

So to help us narrow down the scope:
for those who did report this or one of the duplicate messages and haven't done so yet, can you please add your full windows version (including 32 or 64 bit) ?
Comment 18 Ben 2011-10-29 09:08:59 UTC

Comment 22 Geert Janssens 2011-11-06 13:29:28 UTC
Hmm, so far it seems 64bit vs 32bit is not the crucial factor or at least not the only one. There is clearly a mix of 32bit and 64bit systems having the problem.

I can't reproduce this at all on my test system (which is a 32bit XP system) and I don't have access to other Windows installs to test this with. So for now, I'm a bit stuck here.

There was also a report on the gnucash user list of someone who restored his 64bit Windows 7 to a backup of somewhere in June, applied all (Windows) updates again, after which all worked fine again. [1]

Windows 7 64Bit, Gnucash version 2.4.8 and reports are blank.
Export to HTML and the report is there. How can we take this issue forward?
Comment 24 turtlbrdr 2011-12-27 17:20:35 UTC
as an update to my status; after a complete re-install of my windows operating system the reports now work on my computer. So it seems the issue has resolved itself.
Comment 25 Jeff 2012-02-04 18:08:40 UTC
First time user. I just installed GnuCash 2.4.9. I am having the problem where the reports are not visible, but if I export them, I can the resulting html file using either my Firefox (default) or Internet Explorer (yuck) browser.

I am running Windows XP (MCE) Service Pack 3.

On a whim, I tried changing my default browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer, restarted GnuCash (no need to reboot) and now the reports are working.

Hopefully, others will find this helpful and perhaps we find a resolution to the problem.

Comment 26 Heiko 2012-02-06 19:38:09 UTC
I used GnuCash (maybe 2.3.X) for the last time about a year ago. Recently I upgraded to 2.4.9 (on Windows XP, 32 bit, current SP & fixes) and encountered the same problem: all reports show only a blank page, while an export produces a valid and useable HTML page.
Installing 2.4.10 SVN wouldn't help, but changing the Windows default Internet browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer does.

Comment 27 Fredrik Persson 2012-02-06 21:04:14 UTC
Changing default browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer can in no way be considered a workaround or fix. How are users on Linux and OSX going to switch to IE?

Devs need to try and fix this. This bug has been around for almost a year.
Comment 28 Heiko 2012-02-06 23:21:10 UTC
You might want to give 2.4.10 RELEASE version a try (available since today). So far, it worked for me, even after I re-set the default browser to Firefox. There's hope :-)

This bug only exists on Windows. Linux and OS X users don't have this problem. So in that perspective, changing the default browser can very well be considered a workaround. Or even a fix if the problem is actually something messed up in the windows registry.
>
> Devs need to try and fix this. This bug has been around for almost a year.

As said before, none of the devs has ever managed to reproduce this problem, so we are still clueless to the cause of it. Without finding the cause, it's pretty much impossible to come up with a fix or even determine if the problem is actually GnuCash related or not.

Heiko's latest finding that switching default browers may fix it is a good clue and worth trying by the other experiencing this problem.
Comment 30 Fredrik Persson 2012-02-07 14:52:57 UTC
Geert: I'm sorry about the harsh language.

I'm still willing to run a debug build on my PC where this bug shows up like clockwork. I'll run it and send all logs and findings back to you. If that would help.
Comment 31 Geert Janssens 2012-02-08 14:15:03 UTC
Those logs are welcome indeed.

At the same time, did you try to change the default browser on your system and check if that fixes the problem ?

This also raises some other questions that may be relevant:
- Do any of you experiencing this issue have other software installed that uses webkit, like Google's Chrome for example ?
- What is in the path environment variable (On Windows XP you can find this by right-clicking on My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Environment Variables tab). There have been some reports of other gnu/gtk based applications interfering with GnuCash (lilypond, gpg4win,...)
Comment 32 Fredrik Persson 2012-02-08 16:57:39 UTC
Geert: Certainly. You will need to tell me where the logs are stored. (Win 7)

I have not, that I am aware of, experienced this issue with other software in the way you describe.

The PATH variable is PATH=C:\Perl\site\bin;C:\Perl\bin;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\;C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\syswow64;C:\Program Files\PuTTY;C:\Program Files (x86)\GtkSharp\2.12\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32\bin;C:\strawberry\c\bin;C:\strawberry perl\site\bin;C:\strawberry\perl\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\SnapAPI\;C:\Program Files (x86)\VodBurner\;"C:\Program Files\ffmpeg-git-4e7b3ef-win64-static\bin";"C:\Program Files\Wireshark";C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVtoolnix
Comment 33 Geert Janssens 2012-02-10 10:53:17 UTC
Fredrik, from your answer I couldn't deduce if you tried to change your default browser to check if this would fix the problem. Can you let me know if this makes any difference ?

How to get default trace log file can be read here:
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Windows#Error_messages.2C_Trace_file

You may want to start gnucash with more debug logging enabled. For that open
Start menu->Run...
In that window enter
"c:\Program Files (x86)\GnuCash\bin\gnucash" --log "gnc=debug"
and click Run (or Ok or whatever). Mind the quotes, they are important.

Then in GnuCash open a report and quit gnucash again. You can then attach the tracefile the belongs to the most recent session to this bug.
Comment 34 Fredrik Persson 2012-02-10 12:47:28 UTC
Geert,

I did try to change the default browser from Chrome to Internet Explorer, it did not fix the problem for me.

Comment 36 Geert Janssens 2012-02-10 16:51:07 UTC
Thanks you for the log. Although there is a lot of information in it, there's unfortunately nothing suggesting why the report would turn up empty.

Google Chrome is a webkit based browser. GnuCash is using webkit as well. I wonder if there is some form of interference going on here (we discovered such interference between gnucash and lilypond recently).

Could you try to temporarily uninstall Google Chrome from that machine and check if this has got any influence on the reports in GnuCash ?
Comment 37 Andreas Petersson 2012-02-10 21:52:18 UTC
Hi, I also have this problem.

Running Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have set IE as standard and uninstalled crome restarted but no change.

I can see a new "gnc-report-xxxxxx.html" being generated in C:\Users\Andreas\AppData\Local\Temp for every report and it opens fine in browser when I click on it.

Hope it can help.. Nice program!

Comment 40 Francois Meunier 2012-02-11 20:34:20 UTC
(In reply to comment #39)
I may have found a solution to this issue - (At least I managed to fix it on my machine)
I noticed that despite having no other browser installed on this machine, IE9 was not set as the "default web browser" (IE9\Settings\Internet Options\Programs Tab\Default Web Browser).

Fixing this "default browser" problem enabled my reports to work again in Gnucash.

HOW TO FIX IT:

Repeated attempts to set IE9 as the default browser failed and there is lots of literature out there about the issue with all sorts of solutions to set a default browser including extension associations to programs, registry keys updates and how system set-ups are overriden by applications calling a web browser internally.

I'll cut a long story short as to how I managed to make the default browser stick:

- Click on Start Button
- click on Control Panel
- Select Network and Internet (view by category)
- Click on Internet Options
- Select the Programs Tab
- At the bottom of the tab, select Set Progams
- Select the bottom option "set program access and computer defaults"
- YOu are then asked to chose a configuration:
-> I then extended the "Custom configuration" section and clicked on the radio button to make Internet Explorer the default browser=> didn't work / I finally chose to use the Windows Configuration => Success

I am in no way a technical guy so there's much I can add to this other than it looked like GNUCASH just didn't call a browser at all to display the report it had created. It could also explain why exporting the file and forcing IE or Firefox or any browser to edit the file then worked.
Comment 41 Andreas Petersson 2012-02-11 22:42:31 UTC
Hi!

I Can confirm that this also worked for me!

After choosing "Windows Configuration" Gnucash manages to show the reports.

A little odd detail is that I normally use firefox as standard browser and after choosing "Windows Configuration" I still have firefox as standard and Gnucash works anyway?!
Comment 42 Geert Janssens 2012-02-21 12:05:24 UTC
What happens if you reset the configuration to Custom again afterwards ?

I am just wondering if it's a configuration glitch in Windows that gets fixed by once explicitly changing it, or whether the problem is really with the custom configuration itself.

For the record. I played with the same config panel on my Windows XP box, but I still can't reproduce this issue.
Comment 43 Mike Evans 2012-02-21 17:06:19 UTC
I just recommended someone to read and try the ideas in comment 40 on IRC. He reported that it worked for him. His system = Windows 7 32 bit.
Comment 44 Andreas Petersson 2012-02-21 18:00:38 UTC
Hi!

I can't unfix it.
After following Comment 40 the reports works with all settings I can come up with.

My system is about 3 years now with a lot of install/uninstall. I would vote for that some glitch in windows gets fixed. Maybe this fix should be mentioned in the doc or faq..
Comment 45 lmontgomery 2012-02-24 21:26:51 UTC
Using GNUCash 2.4.10 build r22003 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with Service Pack 1, I experienced the 'blank reports' problem.

After configuring Windows as per comment 40, the problem has been resolved.
Comment 46 Fredrik Persson 2012-02-25 08:43:55 UTC
The workaround in comment 40 has fixed the problem for me as well. Running 64-bit windows 7 with gnucash 2.4.7.

If I was a gnucash developer, I would consider this workaround a hint on how to fix the problem. Not a reason to close the bug. We want gnucash to work when installed, not work after install + 2-3 hours of google for workarounds, right?
Comment 47 Duncan D 2012-03-02 14:30:27 UTC
I would just like to add that i was working with gnucash perfectly well on my 32bit vista. then one day, about a month ago, the reports suddenly stopped displaying.

It was around the same time that i asigned the opening text files with IE. It was also around this time that i installed google chrome as my default browser by mistake and Changed it back again.

I can confirm that the workaround in comment 40 worked for me too. Well done Francois!!

I havn't read of anyone else who started off with fully working reports and them lost them so i hope this information os of some use.
Comment 48 Duncan D 2012-03-02 15:31:58 UTC
The reports (invoices in my case) are not printing now. I can still export them and print like that but this is clearly not ideal.
I have also noticed, that when i select a destination folder to export to, any html files already in the destination folder indicate google chrome association (google icon).
It is only when i view the folders directly (not through gnucash) that the html files have the little blue 'e' associating them with IE.
This surely indicates that gnucash is still trying to use google chrome for its html reports and needs some extra tweeking.
any suggestions?
Comment 49 Matthias Mett 2012-03-26 21:05:33 UTC
I have the same issue that invoices are not printing. The invoice appear blank but i can still export them. Workaraound in Comment 40 did not work on my Windows 7 Starter and Vista 32 Computers.
Comment 50 Alexander Rust 2012-04-02 18:57:52 UTC
I messed around with this problem and think I have some important additional informations regarding the encoding:

1. i'm using win7 ultimate 64bit. language german. gnucash 2.4.10 r22003 from 2012-02-11.

2. in march (März) the report was not shown. in april (April) it does. This seems to be a problem with the umlaute äöüÄÖÜß

in my gnucash.trace....log i found some entries like

* 18:25:13  CRIT <GLib> g_utf8_to_utf16: assertion `str != NULL' failed

maybe this depence on the "März". these are the only kind of crit messages.

3. start the invoice-print from menu reports. the following text is on screen:

<schnipp>
Invoice No
No valid invoice selected. Click on the Options button and select the invoice to use.
</schnapp>

this is the same report which was not shown in march!

to test i added an "(meine Änderung)" to invoice.scm. After this the screen is blank!

changed my changings to "(meine Aenderung)" and the report works well.

4. added a customer with an umlaut works fine. which is no wonder because the program itself uses the right encoding.

5. no idea why the export works fine with the umlaut problems. i opened an file from the temp folder in notepad++. it says Dos\Windows and ANSI as UTF-8. But the "März" comes up like "MxE4rz" and "xE4" has a black background. Other textes are fine like "haftungsbeschränkt".

6. found out in firefox. the ä in "haftungsbeschränkt" is UTF-8. the ä in "März" is in Windows ISO-8859-15.

-----

i hope this helps, because i have still this problem with invoices of month march.
Comment 51 David Carlson 2012-04-10 19:18:35 UTC
Hi,

I am also running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit OS. I am using GnuCash 2.4.10 built from svn r22003 on 2012-02-11. A few days ago several reports became invisible in GnuCash with no exceptions being found in my incomplete search, but reports could still be exported as others have reported here. If it makes any difference, this happened right after I closed all the reports that had been left open for several weeks in the notebook tabs.

I tried the procedure reported by Francois Meunier in comment #40, and it also worked for me. While poking around I noticed that IE9 64 bit is prohibited from being default by the 64 bit OS! I tried to find out whether my copy of IE9 is 64 bit or 32 bit, but help > about did not specify. Also, Firefox is still my default browser after setting the windows default.

I also have Google Chrome installed. It was not installed correctly and was stuck at release 12.something until yesterday when I un-installed it and re-installed it at release 18.something. I think the invisible reports issue started before I found my Chrome problem, and did not end after my re-install until I did the Windows Browser default procedure.

I also use PDF Creator. I accidentally let a recent "update" hijack my search preferences, changing them in all my browsers to use that other search engine that superficially resembles Google, but isn't. I don't know if that is germane.

Unfortunately, I did not try to run a trace. I guess this is only a "me too", as I don't think that I have added anything new to investigate.

David C
Comment 52 David Carlson 2012-04-11 14:48:23 UTC
There is something that I can add. I had left some reports open in the notebook tabs while Gnucash was closed and I implemented the procedure to change to windows defaults for browsers mentioned by Francois Meunier in comment #40.

After that, the reports previously opened in the notebook tabs were still invisible, while newly created reports were then 'fixed'. This suggests that some report attribute that is set and remembered when the tab is opened is affected.

It is certainly looking like Gnucash is going to have to work around some bug that is actually in either another program or even the in the windows OS.

Perhaps the Check printing bug <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=631611> is actually suffering from a related external problem.

Thanks Mr.Frabcois. Perfect solution. Well done. The problem solved.
Comment 56 TommyDi 2012-11-16 10:08:21 UTC
I have the same problem. The solution in comment #40 did not work, nor changing the default browser to IE.
I came to the conclusion that the date included in the reports (the today date) is causing the problem.

Try this: print a report that usually results blank. Go to theblank printed invoice tab, then press the “Options” button and change the “Today Date Format” (located in the “Display” tab) to %d.%m.%Y. After that the report will show up.

Another workaround that worked for me was to change the Regional settings of the PC to English (my initial setting was Greek). After restarting the program, the newly created reports are not blank.
The above worked on Windows 7 and on Windows XP.

The “Today Date Format” default value (%B %#d, %Y) creates a date in the form of “November 16, 2012”. With the Greek Regional settings the month is written in Greek characters which results in some kind of conflict. (When I export a blank invoice to html, the date shows with strange characters instead of the month.)

Hope that these will help identify the problem.

TommiDi,

Thank you for your comment. However what you describe really looks like another bug to me. Can I ask you to open a new report for this, so it can be tracked separately ? With this, the current bug can keep focus on the problem that reports display blank when the initial Windows browser preference selection is not initialized. Thank you.

Duncan,

Sorry for the late reply. You don't mention if you tried the workaround as explained in comment 40 or not. So I can't tell if you are having the same problem or not.

However the different icons displayed in the folder when viewed via GnuCash or a plain windows explorer are an interesting clue. It shows that on your system (and probably many others that have this problem) GnuCash perceives google chrome as the default browser, while windows assumes IE9 to be default.

On my test system, both locations show Firefox as icon (which is my default browser).

When you export them, what icon do the saved html files get ? Is this different in the destination location file selector in GnuCash and when looking at the same folder via the Windows file explorer ?

Other than that, perhaps you have the same problem as TommyDi, that the "Today Date Format" is not properly recognized by GnuCash.

32 bit Windows Vista Business edition Gnucash 2.4.12 built from r22850 on 2013-03-31 still the same problem and comment 40 worked for me :-)

The bug status should go to NEW.
Comment 62 Geert Janssens 2013-05-02 16:58:08 UTC
I have always hesitated to set it to new because no developer ever managed to reproduce this.

Given the number of users running into this, I will change the status.
Comment 63 Duncan D 2013-09-12 21:27:49 UTC
When exported, the files are displayed as all html files - in windows file explorer they get a IE icon and in gnucash, they get a google chrome icon.

I have now uninstalled google chrome and now however i view html files, they show as IE associated.

this is a printing problem. I produce an invoice, press print invoice, make it look nice and click 'print'. I then opens the print window. That's where it all falls apart. The 'pages' box in the 'print range' section is blank, indicating that there are no pages to print.

I click print and the little printer icon appears on the bottom right of the menu bar but indicates there are no pages to print and disappears again a few moments later.

I think i might try re-installing my printer!

This procedure did not work for me; however, it set me on the path to fix the problem on my system. Apparently there was something wrong with my Internet Explorer installation. I tried using Microsoft's "Fix it" to repair, but this did not work. I ultimately had to uninstall Internet Explorer (and all it's previous versions) and then I re-installed Internet Explorer. The GnuCash reports were then no longer blank!! Problem solved...and I still have Firefox as my default browser. (My system was using Windows 7 64-bit.)

Thanks.

Hello,

I've had the problem with the reports not showing and the following helped me.

# My configuration:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 8 Pro
OS Version: 6.2.9200 N/A Build 9200
System Locale: ru;Russian
Input Locale: en-us;English (United States)
GnuCash 2.6.1 (This copy was built from git rev abbd3ab+ on 2014-01-27.)

# What I've done

I've tried the steps in the comment #40 here and it didn't help. When I opened my `cash.gnucash` file from my secure folder reports weren't displayed. They were blank. But when I run GnuCash from its installation folder at "C:\Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\gnucash.exe" it worked.

The reporter in bug 734072 reported yet another variation to work around the issue:

I just hit this issue on my machine as well. The workaround does not help.

Gnucash 2.6.15, Windows 10, 64bit

I've used gnucash now for a couple of years and this is the first time I'm running into this. If I look into the temp folder I see the html reports correctly generated (I can open them in a browser and the work fine). The trace file contains:

* 15:53:17  WARN <Pango> failed to choose a font, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderWin32', script='latin'
* 15:53:17  WARN <Pango> failed to choose a font, expect ugly output. engine-type='PangoRenderWin32', script='common'
* 15:53:22 WARN <gnc.app-utils> Could not spawn perl: Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory)

Reassign version to 2.4.x so that individual 2.4 versions can be retired.

Same issue with latest version Gnucash 2.6.19 on Windows 7: when generating any report, the report html file is generated in C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp but Gnucash crashes. Stack trace and trace log are attached.
Comment 73 Michael Berkson 2018-03-07 18:47:47 UTC
I had exactly the same problem as wout_de_nolf@yahoo.com (Comment 72) running Gnucash 2.6.19 on Windows 7.

However, I followed Francois Meunier's Comment 40 and the commands on the Reports tab are working normally, after a delay which produced the error message "gnucash.exe is not responding."

As Andreas Petersson found (Comment 41) Firefox remains my default browser even after choosing "Windows Configuration."
Comment 74 wout_de_nolf 2018-04-19 08:46:22 UTC
Michael Berkson's comment 73 didn't work for me. The problem seems to be solved however in GNUcash version 3.0
