GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 638036
"Value" layer mode should be changed to "luminosity"
Last modified: 2015-06-06 21:45:06 UTC
the "value" layer mode, as is, is not useful for graphic work. Value does not map to any human-recognizable color term. In other photo manipulation apps, there is usually a "luminosity" color mode that applies the brightness of the new layer to the hue and saturation of the existing data. I propose changing the layer mode to luma / lightness / luminosity (or adding another layer mode in that name if "value" is needed for some script) and for the compositing of this layer use the L value from the HSL color mode instead of the V from HSV. you can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV#Disadvantages this also applies to the paintbrush mode.
See bug #325564 for a related discussion.
This is actually a duplicate, I guess the LCH Lightness layer mode does the trick. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 325564 ***
