GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 635891
Gnome-session-properties loads with too small a default window
Last modified: 2010-12-03 19:45:22 UTC
Forwarded: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/633433 /usr/bin/gnome-session-properties (System->Preferences->Startup Applications) G-s-p starts up with small window (450x375 pixels) in the centre of the screen. This results in a number of textual descriptions in the main list box being cut off short and hidden by other widgets, even when when there is plenty of available room on the display. Ideally g-s-p should start up at a larger size (taking into account available desktop real-estate), thus allowing the user a better view of the control panel options and their descriptions: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/633433/+attachment/1557858/+files/Cant_read_whole_sentence_even_though_its_short.png
See also bug #329895 which is asking for persistence of size across loads for g-s-p if the user has already made it bigger, whereas this bug is asking for the window just to be larger in the first place (such that the user doesn't _need_ to resize it!).
Turns out that the initial size is even worse with CJK: http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/7261/1010e1.png (Latin) http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/8560/1010c1.png (CJK)
Created attachment 175369 [details] [review] Patch to fix bug I attached a patch fixing the issue. It just changes the window's default size to 640x480.
I committed a similar patch.
This bug was probably the GtkVBox -> GtkBox GtkDialog bug in desguise fwiw
