GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 611453
When creating a new user, "Shortname" should really be "Username"
Last modified: 2010-07-01 12:51:45 UTC
Bug first reported in lp : https://bugs.launchpad.net/gst/+bug/529744 Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch) Release: 10.04 gnome-system-tools Installed: 2.29.91-0ubuntu1 When creating a new user, the dialogue prompt has an entry for "Shortname" Expected: When creating a user I expected to be asked to fill out user-name What happened instead. Instead I was prompted to put in shortname. Screenshot of the bug: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39895142/Screenshot-Create%20New%20User.png
I'm really not sure "Username" is of any help to anybody. The intent was to be more easy to understand for people, and administrators will understand what "Short Name" refers to. I'd need more advice from usability people. Anyway, for now we're in string freeze and I won't break it for such a minor change.
I understand we are in a string freeze. I still think it needs to be fixed at least eventually. I do agree that administrators will understand what short name refers to they may have to think about it for a bit but they will understand what it means. However I would also argue that more people know what a Username means(They just are not sure what username they need to be referring to.)I would argue that less people know what shortname references to after all I am not a beginning user and If I can't even figure it out in less then a mili-second a normal user differently would not be able to. In addition to that this is a tool for administrators(or users acting as administrators.) Why don't we keep it close to what they have been taught all along. I would also argue that a beginning administrator might be thrown through a loop when he/she sees short-name. I also agree that Username is rather technical. It does not have to be username. You could say login name,or login too. However I believe that shortname is a bad choice.

Fix pushed as 2fda0cf. I've gone with "Login"; it seems broadly used and nicer than "Username", whose difference with "Real name" might not be very clear. But if you want to fix to appear one day in Ubuntu, you should also report it in accounts-dialog, since it's what 9.10 will use. I has the same New user dialog. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=accountsdialog.

10.10 yes. 10.04 isn't likely to get this fix since this would mean breaking translations.

Its just plain "Login" which sounds like an action .Further , In the gdm "Log In" is the name of the button too. "Login Name" or "Login ID" would be better. Could you update that? I can file a bug with in accounts-dialog mentioning the new change. [FWIW , gmail uses username :) ]
OK, GDM seems to be using "Username", so let's go with this one. But consistency is almost the only criterion here - I asked GDM's author about that some time ago and he didn't have a strong opinion on either of the choices. Pushed as a9a2f0a1.
