GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 595144
loading page progress bar should sit in the status bar instead of the url bar
Last modified: 2011-12-10 17:30:02 UTC
Summary : I think that a progress bar is needed but that having the progress bar in url bar is disruptive. A progress bar in the user's peripheral vision would be better : enough to provide the loading state information whereas it would not be disruptive. The status bar seems to be a good candidate for the progress bar http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/controls-status-bars.html.en --- I don't think that the loading state information should be exposed like a first class citizen : it's not a primordial information. People know that there is a moderate/reasonable loading time when they try to load a page. There is nothing unusual there. People don't want/need to know what is the progress state unless the loading take much time as usual. In other words, in normal use cases people don't need to look at the progress bar and therefore Epiphany should not impose the user to look at the progress bar. That's why the progress bar should be displayed in the status bar (which is the goal of the status bar to provide that kind of piece of information) to not disrupt the user but to allow him, if he wants, to have the information. Do you imagine having a progress bar for everything thing you do in your life ? Do you want a coffe ? Use the coffe machine and enjoy the progress bar (but do i need a progress bar ? i already know it takes 45 seconds !) Do you need to go from the 6th floor to the ground-floor ? Use the lift and enjoy the progress bar (but do i need a progressa bar ? i already know it takes 1 minute !) Do you need to park your car and come back home ? Use your remote control to open your electric automatic gate and enjoy the progress bar (but do i need a progress bar ? i already know it takes 40 seconds !) etc. The widget is cool but i don't think it makes Epiphany more usuable, on the contrary. Please, keep the GUI simple and non-disruptive without cool but not necessary stuff I'd like to add that i don't have any preconceived idea about that feature : i wanted that feature which was looking cool but since i have it, i don't want it anymore. Thanks
PS : i don't think that the progress bar should sit in the url bar by default, but we could of course keep that feature and let the user activate it thanks to a gconf key if some people like it
I personally disagree on an artistic standpoint. On the usability side of things, however, I don't really know. I can bring in the fact that in Chromium, there isn't even a progress bar (just a throbber as the tab icon), and I did not even notice without paying attention!
Yeah, I actually hate the progress on entry thing. When pages load too fast it looks like the entry is flashing/flickering, and it bothers me because I feel there's something wrong with it, when pages load slowly, the progress information bothers me because it makes reading the location a bit confusing. I would prefer taking it back to the status bar, but I am also OK with removing it.
There are valid points here : since Epiphany already has a throbber which shows the loading state, and that the loading time is moderate, a progress bar doesn't seem necessary at all
(In reply to comment #4) > There are valid points here : since Epiphany already has a throbber which shows > the loading state, It shows loading state, but not loading progress. Moreover, the throbber was originally planned to disappear in 2.28 but was put back in the last minute because we don't have a good progress indicator in single-page (no tabs) mode. > and that the loading time is moderate, Only if you have broadband. > a progress bar doesn't seem necessary at all I disagree.
indeed, not everybody have broadband. Therefore let's get back to the main suggestion : loading page progress bar should sit in the status bar instead of the url bar. What do you think ? For my part it would be far less disturbing whereas it would still (and more consistently) brings the progress state information to the user.
I'd go to the other extreme. Why not get rid of the status bar completely by default? This is detailed in bug #609713.
Exactly. I was going to suggest same as Comment 7. The whole status bar is unnecessary and takes space from a page. Chromium does not have status bar. Opera got rid of it. And the flickering of progress bar on broadband could be fixed by activating progress bar only if the page takes more than 1 second (or other arbitrary number).
i guess that report can be marked as WONTFIX
