GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 589295
Cannot un-stretch icon in a Nautilus window
Last modified: 2010-08-09 19:49:58 UTC
Steps to reproduce: - Have an icon on the Gnome desktop - Right click and stretch the icon - Open a Nautilus window - Drag and drop the stretched icon from the desktop to the Nautilus Window - The icon in the Nautilus window is now stretched and cannot be un-stretched because there is no stretch option when right-clicking on the icon Expected behavior: - Either have no stretched icons in Nautilus windows - Or have stretched icons in Nautilus windows, with a contextual menu to alter the stretching

You can unstretch the icons from any view with 'Edit -> Restore Icon's Original Size'.
Ok, I see that option... However, I think it would be much better if the stretch options were present in the contextual menu of Nautilus in addition to the 'Edit' menu. After all, all other contextual actions available from the desktop seem to also be present in the contextual menu of Nautilus. For example, I can 'Move to trash' from the contextual menu both in Nautilus and the desktop; I don't have to 'Edit' -> 'Move to trash' in Nautilus, luckily.
This is very unsymmetrical, and as a consequence rather undiscoverable. I did not discover it... and it thus felt like a bug. ANd *that* is a bug. It goes against the principle of least surprise.
As I don't like to clutter context menus too much, I think in that case a good solution would be unstretch automatically icons when they're copied from the desktop (or remove entirely the possibility to stretch/unstretch icons not on the desktop, as that doesn't seem to be very useful in regular views).
I like the option of removing stretching when moving out of the desktop. I have never used streching in any other place apart from the Desktop, so that would work too, I guess.
Created attachment 166537 [details] [review] Removes manual layout from non-desktop views (#589295) This removes the "Arrange Items -> Manually" and "Clean Up by Name" from Icon View as it makes little sense to manually layout your icons on other places then the desktop. This also removes stretched icons in the same places. Good or bad idea?
Review of attachment 166537 [details] [review]: As I said, I'd rather disable 'Resize Icon' while not on the desktop, without touching manual layout options.

I know the spatial idea has fallen out of favor (and I am simply shocked—and mild annoyed—by that, to be honest!), but has it really stopped making sense now? Really?
Simply removing the 'Resize Icon' while not on the desktop is the only sensible fix to this.

Could you post a screenshot of how you use the manual layout? Would help to know the usage advantages here. [I've always wondered why someone would use a manual layout in a file *manager*. while it makes sense in the desktop though.] or How does it help organize better?
Plus there is an item "Clean Up by Name" , which is even more confusing as to why "Name" is the only option that we are allowed to Re-organize with.

As Vish stated, nautilus is a file manager and should be able to handle this for you. Also, I think that because manual mode is only available for Icon view when not in compact layout it's confusing for users. Making sense? For spatial - maybe. For browsing mode where the window might have a different size when you open a folder - don't think so. But please - prove me wrong. ;)
@Vish and Marcus: if you want a broader discussion on manual layout, or 'Clean up by Name', please bring it down to the mailing list. What I said in comment #5 and comment #8 is my favourite solution.

Created attachment 167144 [details] [review] Enable scaling of icons on desktop only (#589295)
Review of attachment 167144 [details] [review]: Are you sure this is enough? I would also like the 'Resize Icon...' and 'Restore Icon's Original Size' menu entries to be removed from the window menus. Also, while you're at it, it would be nice at this point to move the feature into fm-desktop-icon-view.c instead of hardcoding type checks in fm-icon-view
Created attachment 167213 [details] [review] Updated patch No, I totally missed those menus, sorry. This one adds a new virtual method and uses that one instead.
Review of attachment 167213 [details] [review]: Thanks for your patch, looks good. Please push to master.
