xpdf, xournal, okular correctly show yellow highlighting. Evince shows the yellow highlighting, but the text is invisible beneath it (you cannot see the text, but you can select it).

the highlighting was produced by mendeley, a pdf-making tool that is becoming popular very fast.

I would upload the pdf, but I do not see a place to upload it here.
