album sort patch (6.37 KB, patch)

Description Dylan VanHerpen 2008-11-16 21:29:47 UTC
The default sorting order for Albums in the browser doesn't really make much sense when 'All Albums' is selected. I think it would be better to follow Muine's behavior and sort by artist first, and then by album title. Optionally, right-clicking on the 'All Albums' icon could present an option to sort on different criteria (artist, release date). Maybe also replace the icon that represents 'All Albums' with some sort of carousel icon.

So you want to sort the albums in the album browser by artist, album, etc.

Review of attachment 174424 [details] [review]:

The patch works fine. I don't agree with options placement though, I think adding them to the main menu under View / Browser makes more sense.

If you don't mind I will commit a slightly modified version of this to the browser-filters branch.

Anything new on this? The patch still applies though with tiny offset.
Comment 6 Jesús S. Lacasa 2011-04-14 18:57:51 UTC
I think the same way. I was going to report this bug (or suggestion) when I noticed it was already done.

I like the albums grid a lot, more than the clutter flow, and I find it really usefull managing large music collections. But I would really appreciate if albums were sorted by artist name instead album name. From my point of view it would make life easier.

I hope this report is helpful.
Comment 7 Peter Galbraith 2011-10-03 03:02:58 UTC
Same here. I'm new to banshee (2.0.1) and this would be my main criticism of it from a usability standpoint. It's silly to have all my "Jack Johnson" albums spread over the grid instead of grouped together. I hope you guys that address this. Consider this a very desirable wishlist bug!

Thanks,
Peter

Same here, I feel it makes more sense. Most people will sort like this in a CD case :

Artist > Album
For the most meticulous ones
Artist > Year > Album
I also agree with :

I think adding them to the main menu under View / Browser makes more sense.

That would be a nice improvement.

Thanks

album sort patch

ok here is a new version.
In fact, I have done my own patch with bug 670377 and I see this patch which was really close to my patch so I merge them and tada here is the patch.
I have test it on my version and it work pretty well.
I add the option under the browser option which do not exist previously and is far better than adding a new submenu in my opinion.
For moment, only 2 options as in the current patch but let the door open for improvement with average rating and total length sorting option...
Comment 10 alter.cat 2012-06-05 12:22:16 UTC
Excuse my lameness, but how do I apply this patch? Does this imply compiling Banshee myself?

In any case, I think it would be most reasonable to include this as a feature in the main version; sorting albums by name without sorting them by artist first makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why would anyone want to have all Beatles albums spread over his 4000+ album collection instead of having them all grouped together and ordered either alphabetically or by release date?
Comment 11 Theodore Lee 2013-02-09 06:05:31 UTC
Any progress on this recently? Having more sensible sorting in Banshee's album browser would be fantastic.
Comment 12 El Piraña 2013-07-27 23:58:49 UTC
On version 2.6.1 seems this feature haven't been merged yet...

Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project
to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.
