GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 427628
please set "always open in browser windows" as default
Last modified: 2010-07-06 21:11:47 UTC
Please can you set "always open in browser windows" as default? Most users find it annoying that when crawling through a deep directory tree, new windows are constantly created for each folder.
Created attachment 86019 [details] [review] this is a patch
Also most of users use browser mode instead and a lot of distributions set browser mode as default too Thanks a lot
//Usability bug Users cannot associate the description of this option "always open in browser windows" with the expected behavior (do/do not open directory in new window). So when they want to change the behavior of their file browser they don't try this option.
I think the browser mode should be dropped completely instead. Then users wouldn't bug me anymore that xxxuntu and S..e have enabled the Microsoft-like browser mode by default. Nautilus would be even simpler without this option.
I think we should decide what to do about this in the 2.24 timeframe (closing as WONTFIX or applying the patch). @Gotz: I *really* don't think that is a good idea. Browser mode is very good at what it does and many users (me included) use it by default.
Just wanting to shime in as a user that loves the current default. I also like the browser mode but only for navigating large folders.
Maybe find a better name than current "Always open in browser windows" would be enough (at least for me). I think that this description is not too intuitive for users not familiarized with nautilus. Why not something like "Always open in the same window" ? This would be enough for me Thanks

I would like to see browser mod as the default mode as well. Spatial mode gives me way to much open windows. Also note that there is a huge discussion going on about this in the fedora list (started my me). It's around 150 comments at this time. You can read it all here: http://fcp.surfsite.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=65669&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&start=0 Or just directly on the fedora general mailing list.
Changing component as a part of ongoing reorganisation work.
