GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 355793
crash in Movie Player: Opening Totem with a DVD...
Last modified: 2007-09-15 11:35:37 UTC
Version: 2.16.1 What were you doing when the application crashed? Opening Totem with a DVD inserted. I'd just changed the screen resolution and Totem crashed, and now crashes immediately when it's opened. seems to be unique Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately, that stack trace is not very useful in determining the cause of the crash. Can you get us one with debugging symbols? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so.

I'm having this same problem on Ubuntu Edgy, but I can't get totem to produce backtrace with debugging symbols. Could you tell me which packages to install?
totem and glib packages are a good start. Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information

It seems that totem is using xine as standard backend in edgy. After installing totem-gstreamer I have no problems any more. So maybe it's a Xine problem.

In response to a request about duplicate 369871, I've installed all the relevant dbg packages I could find and ran the trace again. If you need any more stuff installed, let me know (and please name the packages). Hope this helps for now. thanks, that is better. hmm are you sure you installed the totem debugging package? We are still missing information for the most important two function calls, bacon_video_widget_blablabla ().
Nope, in fact I'm sure I did not. What is it called? Unlike all the other debug packages, nothing suitable appears on a synaptic search for "totem", nor on a search for "dbg" or "debug". Besides some irrelevant ones, I have repositories in sources.list for edgy, edgy-updates, edgy-security and edgy-backports, all of them with main, restricted, universe and multiverse specified. If you can point me to the .deb package you're looking for, I'll run the trace again. Totem version number is 2.16.2-0ubuntu1.
This happened when I was using the fglrx driver from the repository. Switching to the ati driver removes the problem. I have had other stability issues with the proprietary driver. Sometimes OpenOffice won't open on that screen, but will open on my other screen, which has an older ATI card and uses the open-source driver.
I'm also using fglrx, and not the ATI-provided one. I use one of: * xorg-driver-fglrx version 7.1.0-8.28.8+2.6.17.6-1 * linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-10-generic version 2.6.17.6-1 (Not sure which.) Both are from restricted/misc in the repositories. Hope this is useful. Still need directions to the totem debugging symbols, though.

If totem debug packages are not available with the official repositories I have no idea where to find them. You may want to file a bug report for your distribution and request a totem debug package.

This solved the issue for me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293081 (same issue prevented skype to work in my Ubuntu Edgy installation) It seems there is a problem with screen dimension metrics in Ubuntu Edgy. I'm no expert in xorg, so unfortunately I can't even guess the reason behind this.

Hi everyone. Looks like I'm not the only one having trouble with totem-xine on Ubuntu Edgy! I'm willing to help so if you guys need anything just ask. For a start I can say that like others, switching to totem-gstreamer fixes the issue, and I tried switching back and forth and it can be reproduced at will. Running Xine also crashes, I don't know if it's related. I noticed also that for some time OpenOffice.org crashes. I read on other posts that other people had trouble with OpenOffice and ATI drivers. I happen to use fglrx also.

Hi. I can confirm that the problems are related to the fglrx drivers for ATI cards. I originally had problems with openoffice not working with these drivers a few months ago with Ubuntu 6.06 and found the work around was to overwrite the libGL.so.1.2 file in usr/lib with an older one. After starting afresh with a new install of Ubuntu 6.10 a few days ago I started to have the openoffice problem again (but couldn't fix it in the same fashion) and also the totem problem. I have managed to change the drivers and now have the following when I run fglrxinfo nick@nick-ubuntu:~$ fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 1x TCL OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.3 Mesa 6.5.1) instead of the ATI information that I had previously which looked like this $fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic OpenGL version string: 2.0.6011 (8.28.8) I managed the change by running sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa Hope this helps Nick

I just wanted to add comments that, like others, I am also using an ATI card with the fglrx drivers. This issue is intermittent for me. Aside from that I have nothing else useful to add.

The .wmv file in question, which triggered the crash, was a crypted file. If you open it in Windows Mediaplayer, the Mediaplayer will open a web page asking you to enter your credentials for buying a licence to see the video. this message is the same, as if I try to watch an video on demand e.g. from maxdome.de or arcor.de an I have to buy a license for that video. I guess totem has problems to handle theses files. Opening the .wmv file in VLC Media Player you see only strange artifacts (big boxes or green blur). hope this helps. Nils

I experienced this issue after installing the fglrx driver 8.28, before this I haven't met this problem. But my main problem is that totem crashes not only when a DVD is insterted, but with other media files e.g. avi. I haven't tried to install any gstreamer package as somebody told before, but I agree on the point that it probably should be a xine backend problem.

So, this seems to only happen when using the xine backend and when using the fglrx drivers. So this is really NOTGNOME.
