Description Jeroen 2006-03-27 18:30:16 UTC
Distribution: Ubuntu 6.06 (dapper)
Package: gnome-panel
Severity: Normal
Version: GNOME2.14.0 2.14.x
Gnome-Distributor: Ubuntu
Synopsis: Keyboard accessibility problem
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-panel
Bugzilla-Component: Menu
Bugzilla-Version: 2.14.x
Description:
Description of Problem:
I can't de-focus the menubar using the keyboard.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
(0. Open a random application).
1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Esc a couple of times to focus the top menu.
2. Navigate through all items on the bar with arrowkeys, and open the
main menu (gnome-menu).
3. Don't select any program in the menu, but try to focus a normal
window using only the keboard.

Actual Results:
I can't get the focus away from the menubar.

Expected Results:
Ctrl-Alt-Esc should at least give the focus to other parts of the
screen, but preferably Ctrl-Tab as well.

How often does this happen?
Every time

Additional Information:
1. I'm using Ubuntu Dapper Drake, so it could also be a Ubuntu issue.
2. If you select 'log out' from somewhere in the menu (the 'system' menu
in Ubuntu), the logout window is not shown until the menubar looses
focus. In combination with the bug above, it's impossible to logout
using only the keyboard.

Comment 2 Alexey Rusakov 2006-06-03 14:12:51 UTC
I think the cause of this bug is the same as of the bug 338612: hotkeys don't work when a menu of any kind (GNOME main menu, context menu, application menu...) is displayed. I wonder how many more bugs about this are scattered throughout Bugzilla...
Comment 3 Elijah Newren 2006-06-06 20:06:46 UTC
This is closely related to bug 344059 (which is just the root bug for bug 338612 that Alexey points out); however, even though you can't currently alt-tab while a menu is open you ought to be able to dismiss the menu (by pressing 'Esc') and then using the global keybindings. However, gnome-panel doesn't release the mouse grab when closing the menu after Esc is pressed and this is filed as bug 313880.
