Please describe the problem:
The application menu appears as a small square if a file specified in
<MergeFile> is a dead symlink. 

Steps to reproduce:
1. create dead symlink
2. specify the dead symlink in a mergefile directive
3. Click on applications


Actual results:
no menu is shown.

Expected results:
The application menu is shown as normal

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
This happens with a current (26/12/2004) ubuntu dapper, could be specified as a
distro bug too though.
