Description Prognathous 2005-09-27 09:16:23 UTC
Unfamiliar look and a GUI that's inconsistent with the platform are the main
reasons, IMHO, why so many Windows users give up on GIMP before even discovering
an ounce of its power.

Now, since GIMP is intended to be a powerful image editor and not a flashy media
player, its interface should be as familiar and unobtrusive as possible. A
native-Win32 theme (default on Windows) would help achive this goal.

Another great step in this direction would be to solve the problem of floating
windows being awkward and unfamiliar for Windows users (see Bug #317317).

Thanks,

Prog.

Gtk 2.8 comes with a windows theme by default.
Comment 2 Sven Neumann 2005-09-27 12:19:10 UTC
AFAIK, gtk+ 2.6 already included the native theme but there have been some
improvements to it lately. Please upgrade to the latest version of GTK+ and if
you still think that changes are needed, file bug reports against GTK+ and
include detailed descriptions of what you think could be done to improve it.
Just saying that things look unfamiliar and inconsistent isn't really helpful
and can even be considered rude. Keep in mind that we are all just doing this
for the fun of it.

Sorry if any of what I wrote came off as rude, I certainly didn't intended it to be.

I actually have GTK 2.6.9 and was compltely unware that this theme is supposed
to be a Win32 theme. This is why I made a general suggestion to add a
native-Win32 theme instead of giving detailed descriptions of specific problems
in this theme.

This is how GIMP looks on my machine:

Is this really intended to be a native Win32 theme or have I got something
configured improperly?

Thanks,

Prog.

The GTK+ installers usually offer the theme as an option. Maybe you didn't
install it? The image looks like the default theme.
Comment 5 Sven Neumann 2005-09-27 20:39:30 UTC
I don't understand what the GTK+ installer is doing but the default theme for
the Win32 version of GTK+ is the included one that is supposed to mimic native
look and feel. AFAIK it shouldn't be necessary to install any extra packages.
But it would be worth asking a Win32 GTK+ developer. Anyway, please take this
discussion to a bug report against GTK+.
