The fonts show up fine for me, but I received a stack trace from evince when
trying to select the text under the pen.

It show fine for me too.
I think this is a poppler bug, could you please supply the poppler version and
type? I have "poppler 0.4.2 (spash)". You can find it in the Help->About menu in
Evince.

I get the same kind of garbage trying to open the pdf above in Evince 0.4.0 using poppler 0.4.2 (cairo) (latest versions in Debian testing).  The one in bug 316822 is similar.  I've encountered a couple of other pdfs with the same kind of problem:

I had the same problem with this on my FC4 system, poppler 0.4.1. 

I updated to poppler 0.4.3, and the problem no longer appeared.
