GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 311042
sidebar resizing problem
Last modified: 2008-05-14 13:50:45 UTC
The sidebar title is in two part : on the left you can see which component is active (e.g. "Mail" or "INBOX"), and on the right, in smaller characters, the item is described (e.g. "176 total"). If you resize the sidebar to make it smaller, the first part ("Mail") gets ellipsized, while the second ("176 total") does not. So the minimum size of the side pane is decided by the item description width. In the case of the mailer, this is ok ("176 total" is not very long), but if you switch the calendar component, the item description is the date (e.g. "Wednesday 20 Jul 2005"), so the sidebar is pretty wide. If you switch back to the Mail component, the sidebar cannot be made smaller anymore. It would make sense to ellipsize the item description as well as the component label.

...or does it depend on the width of the 5 component buttons at the left bottom in 2.5.5?
Vincent is right. It depends on that text.
If this is the same bug that means I can't make the sidebar as wide as I'd like it to be (I can't read most of my folder names, and hence the number of unread mails in those folders), then the priority needs to be raised-- it's a killer.
(If it is the same bug, the current workaround seems to be to maximize the app... but I really don't want a maximized mail application on my desktop.)
Bumping version to a stable release.

Created attachment 109634 [details] [review] proposed evo patch for evolution; I thought it will be a hack, but finally Mathias showed me there is a correct way how to obtain layout from the label, so no hack, correct solution.
