Description Vincent Untz 2005-01-09 21:59:35 UTC
The main menu layout should probably be synchronized with the new menu layout in
HEAD.
Is there any proposition for this?
Comment 1 Vincent Untz 2005-01-12 13:58:07 UTC
Sorry for the spam. Mass-marking some bugs to the 2.10.x milestone.

Bug #98883: Applications should NOT be in a submenu

I agree.

Bug 165125 noticed the absence of "Preferences" and "Administration" in the foot
menu.

Comment 6 Rob Adams 2005-02-11 15:55:39 UTC
This is a really serious bug. No access to preferences is pretty annoying.
Comment 7 Bryan W Clark 2005-02-11 16:20:19 UTC
Ok, wow this is late. Here is what I was thinking for this menu. All the apps
are listed inline in the menu like referenced from Bug #98883 Places is a
submenu with the normal places items. Desktop is a submenu with the normal
items minus lock and logout.

---------------
Accessories
Games
....
-------------
Places    =>
Desktop   =>
-------------
Lock
Log Out

I'll try to work on this this week-end...
Comment 9 Naadir Jeewa 2005-02-13 17:33:42 UTC
It would definitely be useful if the Application Launcher applets could link
into those new menus. This would mean that they would need to be assigned an
icon to differentiate them from other application launchers.
Comment 10 Vincent Untz 2005-02-14 21:41:28 UTC
Bryan: do you have a proposition for icons for Places and Desktop?

The patch is big, but it mainly involves moving a lot of code to a new file.
I'll need to update POTFILES.in too

Still need propositions for the icons :-)
Comment 14 Keith Lea 2005-02-17 19:01:28 UTC
I think the Desktop icon should be the same icon used in Show Desktop applet.
Places might be able to use a Computer icon.
Comment 15 Keith Lea 2005-02-17 19:04:40 UTC
Do we really need a menu for the desktop? It's not hard to see the desktop,
especially if there's a Show Desktop applet on the panel. I think making Show
Desktop applet default on the panel would be better than having a Desktop submenu.
Comment 16 Bryan W Clark 2005-02-17 20:10:02 UTC
It's probably going to look a little redundant, but I'd say use a default folder
icon for Places and agree that using the same icon for the show desktop applet
for the Desktop menu.
Comment 17 Vincent Untz 2005-02-17 20:10:49 UTC
Keith: the Desktop menu item is the same as in the menu bar. It's Desktop as in
"Desktop Environment" (not as in "Desktop Folder").

I like the first version better, so here's the patch :-)
Comment 26 Vincent Untz 2005-02-19 11:17:33 UTC
It's in, with release team approval.
Comment 27 Andy Hanton 2005-02-19 16:01:50 UTC
Why does the Desktop entry have the same icon as the Desktop entry in the file
chooser and the show desktop applet? I believe that this will cause user
confusion. Comments 14 and 15 suggest that this will happen. Keith suggested
the icon before he discovered that the menu would not contain the items from the
user's desktop. If one of the icon guys can draw you a good icon for it, that
would be fine. I doubt that they would be able to because the kind of desktop
being refered to has no graphical representation. The best match would probably
be the foot icon, but having a foot icon on the foot menu sounds like a bad idea.
Comment 28 Yury Puzis 2005-02-22 04:56:56 UTC
Maybe using the word "Desktop" for the original menu wasn't such a good idea.
Even in comment 17 Vincent calls it a "Desktop Environment", with the operative
word being "Environment". Maybe that's how the entry should be called. Or
"System" or something.
