GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 158150
Filters vs. Script-Fu
Last modified: 2004-11-13 19:50:20 UTC
There may be an implementation distinction between Filters and Script-Fu, but to the user, these are one and the same. Thus, they should be merged. If more than one top menu level is desired, the splitting should be done via some distinction that doesn't expose GIMP internals in the UI.
Please don't just report bugs without searching for similiar ones. Your reputation will thank you for this some day :)
Yeah, spamming the bug tracker with ill researched or poorly thought out garbage is a waste of our time. Why don't you spend some time researching what's come before, instead of jumping in and annoying everybody?
I think that "jumping in" is the very best way to report UI bugs. Only a newcomer, or one who hasn't used GIMP in years (me), will be well-suited to discovering UI bugs. This is why usability testing is done by careful observation of people who don't know the software very well. If I remain a regular GIMP user, my ability to report these problems will quickly decline as I come to tolerate them. Bugzilla says "Zarro Boogs found." for a "Script-Fu Filters" search. I take that to mean that nobody else has reported this. When I change the query to get RESOLVED, VERIFIED, and CLOSED bugs I only see this one. Had a found others though, that would merely be an indication of high demand. Consider these two: Script-Fu->Alchemy->Clothify Script-Fu->Alchemy->Unsharp Mask From the user's point of view, how are these not filters? Most of Script-Fu belongs under Filters->Toys.

As Sven noted, there *is* a bugzilla bug about this, not to mention a few threads on the mailing list (even recent ones), and even a menu organization page on the wiki. It's very very obvious that you didn't even try to research what's come before, and instead want to waste developer time on duplicate bugs.
I searched for: Script-Fu Filters (so, I did indeed try to research this) Neither "Script-Fu" nor "Filters" are in the summary for the other bug. Your bugzilla is set to only search the summaries by default, which is 99% useless. Besides, your bugzilla instructions imply that it is normal for bugs to be reported multiple times. This is one of the documented reasons for a bug priority to be set to "High". Right here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug_status.html#priority If people didn't re-report bugs, part of the bugzilla documentation would be meaningless. :-)
Your attempt to save face isn't working. Fact is, this was discussed on the mailing list *recently*, and the menu reorg page is very easily found on the wiki, since it's linked from the usability section, which is plainly linked from the frontpage. So it's *everywhere*. You simply did not do basic research. Don't try to justify yourself. You screwed up.
Of course I didn't search mailing lists or a wiki. Even if this topic is there, it doesn't matter. This topic belongs in the bugzilla. Also, if the topic is "*everywhere*", that's yet another reason to mark it high priority. See the GNOME bugzilla documentation for why.
Argument by assertion will not get you anywhere.
Wrestling with a pig surely won't get me anywhere. If you are uninterested in fixing problems, you have no reason to waste time dealing with bugzilla. If the mailing lists and wiki are what you like, well there you go. Be happy. Abusing bug submitters who make minor mistakes doesn't exactly help improve the GIMP. A search for bugzilla bugs in the GNOME bugzilla reveals that I'm not the first person to search only the summaries, not by a long shot. Goodbye sir. I hope you have a better day tomorrow.
If this was your only mistake, I would've let it slide. But you chose to flood the bugzilla with poorly thought out and ill researched reports. And now you're whining because you got called on it. You're getting this treatment because your poor bugzilla flooding is an indication of a larger problem with you.
Duplicates are reported frequently and it is in general not a problem. We locate the duplicate and mark the new bug as such. Happens several times each day and usually doesn't need any further discussion. Most users learn from this mistake and do a better search next time. The point is that you are accusing us of not caring (even though we told you that we care and that there's ongoing effort to improve the menus). Worse, you are trying to tell us how to use Bugzilla. That is rather arrogant behaviour and it is not surprising that it upsets people over here.
