GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 140591
"Sending messages too fast"-warning on every connection
Last modified: 2006-10-09 07:14:19 UTC
Distribution: Debian testing/unstable Package: GnomeICU Severity: normal Version: GNOME2.4.1 0.99 Gnome-Distributor: GNOME.Org Synopsis: "Sending messages too fast"-warning on every connection Bugzilla-Product: GnomeICU Bugzilla-Component: General Bugzilla-Version: 0.99 Description: Description of Problem: Since I updated to 0.99.5-1, whenever I go online gnomeicu pops up a warning "You are sending messages too fast, your last message has been dropped, please wait 10 seconds and resend. If you continue sending messages at this speed, you will be disconnect (sic) by the server. Please give it a break." Sometimes, the connection will be there for a moment, then be dropped again. Connecting again usually works without problems. This is rather weird because gnomeicu does not allow to accumulate messages in offline mode to be sent on reconnect. So whatever traffic there is, it has nothing to do with me typing (or copy'n'pasting) too fast. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. start gnomeicu and go online 2. 3. Actual Results: Warning and, occasionally, disconnect. Expected Results: Program goes silently online. How often does this happen? Arg 0.99.5 was supposed to fix this.. Does it really happen with 0.99.5? Did it happen before upgrading to 0.99.5 ? Do you have a very long list of users? How easy is this to reproduce?

I catch the same problem here with 0.99.5 on debian/sarge (gnome 2.6). It's very easy to reproduce, i simply have to connect to the server. Fortunately I'm not disconnected after this message, but it's definitely extremely annoying. The first time this error occured was after the upgrade to 2.6 propagated from sid to sarge, i think. Unfortunately I didn't watch the version numbers of gnomeicu, so i cannot say if it was already 0.99.5 before the upgrade...
same with me: i'm also running version 0.99.5 on sarge with a 2.4.25 kernel and icewm. the error seems to occur only when i got messages while i was offline. i'm also using NAT - never had it running without a router/masquerader. hope it helps. cheers
Since I've updated to Gnome 2.8 (on gentoo), this bug has become more persistent: the dialog box pops up more often and it even does so when I reconnect after being disconnected. I second comment #4! It definitely has something to do with offline messages. After reading all of them I have to quit GnomeICU and when I launch it again there's not a single error dialog popping up. Kernel: 2.6.8
> Arg 0.99.5 was supposed to fix this.. Funny, for me this error appears only in 0.99.5, it appears everytime i connect, and disconnects me. The older 0.99 version works fine. Distro: gentoo Kernel: 2.6.10
ronnie: Can you try the CVS (see details at http://gnomeicu.sourceforge.net/devel.php) and tell me if the bug happens there too?
This was happening on 0.99.7 (Debian testing) for me. I think I've got it sorted though. I noticed that my data file in .icq was from some pretty ancient version of gnomeicu. I noted down my UIN and rm -rf'd my .icq directory, then ran gnomeicu again and went through the setup process. Now it comes up without problem. I still see "Server says we are sending too fast" in the terminal window I started the program in, but I don't get disconnected. So people who are having this problem might give that a shot.
It's same to me with a fresh installation of Ubuntu (using GnomeICU 0.99.7).
Should be fixed in the latest version.. please advise if it isnt.
