Installed GTK+ 2 and GIMP 2.

Double clicked on the desktop icon to start GIMP.

GIMP startup dialog appears. "Fonts" message appears in the dialog.

A command prompt window appear with the following message:
"(gimp-2.0.exe:2680): GLib-CRITICAL **: file gconvert.c: line 498 (g_convert): 
assertion `str != NULL' failed"

Microsoft error report dialog appears.  "Don't Send" button is clicked.

Program dies hard.

This affects Windows 2000 SP4 as well.

I have the same problem on Windows XP Professional, but only when I have other 
programs open.

Note that this is apparently caused by one or more bad font files. There's also
more info in bug #136786.
