Description Lars Weber 2004-01-05 08:22:03 UTC
I think that the `Search -> Character in Clipboard' menu item is both
confusing and not really useful and should therefore be removed.

If people want to search for a character in the clipboard, they can just
search it using the normal find dialog I think.

It's true that, once you got the idea, using a separate menu entry to
search a character on the clipboard is slightly more convenient. However,
I don't think searching characters on the clipboard is really that
common--after all, if you have the character already on the clipboard you
wouldn't need to search it if you wanted to paste it into a document (the
main use of gucharmap I think). Therefore the increased usability of the
menu is well worth the removal of this item in my opinion.

I think it's worth poiting out that I consider the current behavior of
the search dialog--to search for a character itself if only a single
character is inserted and to otherwise search character names--to be
quite nice and therefore a good replacement for the menu entry! :)

I've never been too happy with this menu item either. In cvs I moved
it to the gnome menu and changed the accelerator key to Insert (with
no modifiers). Please take a look. If you still don't like it I will
be happy to remove it.

Gone in cvs now.
