GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 106722
samba/smb prompts for password for every change of directory
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Hi! Up to now (2.0.6), if you want to access a SMB share you've got to enter your username and password plaintext like this: smb:///username:password@host/share If you don't enter your username and password in this command line, a notification box bumps up to ask for you name and pw ("Authentication required"). Somehow, this doesn't work at least for me. Although I entered the data correct, the box comes up 4 more times but I never get access. It is really annoying and - even worse - dangerous that you've got to enter your password plaintext. Additionally there's another small bug here: "Cancel" doesn't have any effect, the box comes back 5 times in total anyway. Solutions: - Make the "Authentication required" box work correct. - Offer a internal database for usernames and passwords. This would be dangerous too in another way, but at least a password wouldn't be visible on screen when entered. - Enhance the "Authentication required" box: Add an option like "remember my username & pw". Store this data in the internal DB. I hope I was fast enought and this isn't an issue any more :-) Keep up the good work & Thanx. -- Nicolas Keller
Slightly related to bug 110159 (nautilus doesn't give the user a second chance to enter their username and password).
This potentially looks like a duplicate of bug 84647 and looks related to bugs 110159 and bug 114570.
Doh! That's suppose to be bug 86467 not 84647.

argh, this took me forever to find. too many damn bugs in the database. changing the title to something meaningful. I also think is mostly fixed in gnome-2.6, so changing to FIXED. please reopen if it can be reproduced in gnome-2.6 or greater.
