Description Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-11-01 14:24:58 UTC
Displaying the full path in the window title makes using the window list
useless for files that are very deep in hierarchies. It's probably better
just to display the file name.

I think this bug should be closed as WONTFIX.
I see the Dave's point but I think we really need a way to show the
user the full path of the file she is editing.
This is very useful in the case you are editing two or more files with
the same name (for example ChangeLog files).
Probably a better solution could be

Shot Name - Dir name - gedit

but I'm not sure.
BTW, we could wait for more precise indication from the HIG guys.

Andrew: thanks for the patch. I really appreciate your help but in
this case I have to ask you to wait before committing.

One option might be to show the full pathname in the statusbar
instead.
Comment 6 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-11-08 13:11:41 UTC
 Paolo;

See nautilus bug 82407, where i made the same mistake (assuming that
showing the full path was a good idea) both seth and greg merchan from
the hig team disagreed.

I of course have been converted to their way of thinking :)
PLease fixt this. Remember its the data not the location that matters.
And if you must comprimise, showing the file name and than the path
may be acceptable, but I really rather it not be there.

Comment 7 Paolo Maggi 2002-11-08 15:31:22 UTC
What about showing the full path in a tooltip when the mouse is over a
tab?
Comment 8 Paolo Maggi 2002-11-08 15:32:49 UTC
Dave: bug 82407 is a galeon bug. Could you please send me the right
bug number?
Comment 9 Paolo Maggi 2002-11-23 09:58:07 UTC
I have tried to fix this bug as suggested and I have used gedit a bit
with this fix. I found it very confusing since there was no immediate
way to know which file you are working on when you are editing two or
more files with the same name (ex. ChangeLog files).

Note that now you can see the full patch of a file in a tooltip when
you move the mouse on a tab.
Comment 10 Dave Bordoley [Not Reading Bug Mail] 2002-11-23 14:12:24 UTC
bug 82047, is the nautilus bug. Notice my change of heart :)
Comment 11 Eric Ritezel 2003-05-26 14:17:43 UTC
Current CVS shows the full path on tab mouseover, but the full path is
still in the title. I'm currently wondering if this bug is still open
(if anyone's still interested in not showing full path) or if the
patch needs to be updated (what, update 1 line?)
Comment 12 Paolo Maggi 2003-06-30 13:19:04 UTC
Closing this bug as NOTABUG for the reasons I explained months ago.
Comment 13 Jian He 2003-06-30 13:28:59 UTC
In kate, there is "Show full path in title" option in Configure Kate
dialog.
Why not add this option in gedit's Preferences dialog? and show full
path in title default. I prefer full path.
Comment 14 Paolo Maggi 2003-06-30 13:31:32 UTC
No, a good and actually useful default as the current one is OK. No
need of a really rarely used option.
