I wonder if there's some interaction between the various apps that let you
set the volume, including panel applets and cd players.

In version 2.4.0 of gnome-media, only the main volume is saved, and
all the other volumes - pcm, sync etc are set back to default when you
restart or log out/log back in.

Is it significant that every volume gets set to 101 (max) except the
main volume which is set to 100 (and works). Is volume-control
throwing away values > 100 and setting the default every time?
