I think the reporter is talking about the control-center shell
(gnome-control-center --use-shell). Nothing to do with the panel, AFAIK.

Yes, it's a gnome-control-center --use-shell thing. 
And I'm not able to reproduce it on GNOME 2.0.2. 
Someone else please confirm.

In capplet-dir-view-list.c, function list_populate(), set the icon
list width to a value depending on the current font.

As mentioned in direct email (please don't post and mail) the patch seems like
a reasonable partial solution, but will have problems with long worded
languages.  I vote to apply it.
