Description Telsa Gwynne 2002-08-28 12:42:43 UTC
(Actually, we need more for gnome 1.4, but let's look ahead here)

We need systems admin info about GNOME. It comes up all the time.
From email notes about this, things we need are

        * If you're on many Linuxes or Solaris, as a sysadmin you
should already know about PAM for allowing users to run root
applications. Yes, the PAM docs are horrible, but they're
comprehensive. (I'm reminded of this by the current gnome-sudo
        discussion on wherever it is.)

(After writing this I watched someone setting up GNOME for a bunch of
users on shared boxes wanting to know how to get rid of the "reboot/
half/logout" option -- quick fix was to use pam to say users couldn't
run the command, but a way to get rid of even the icons would be good:
users shouldn't be able to reboot boxes other people are working on.)

        * gconf documentation.
        * something akin to setting up a default account in /etc/skel
which all users automatically pick up is the big question people
        want answered here.
        * menu-editing for the default menu.

Also need notes on gnome and LTSP (http://www.ltsp.org) and kiosks.

Particularly valuable would be a series of links to write-ups from
people of "how we did it here". Lots of them.

Paul Cooper's guide is at darbolinux somewhere and I have lost it.
URL to follow when I find it.

Is this addressed by the GNOME sysadmin guide?

In very large part. There are still bits and pieces unaddressed.
I'll get a friend involved in setting Gnome up for lots of users
to go through this and tell me what he needed.

Did you get any comments on the sysadmin guide?
Comment 4 Telsa Gwynne 2005-01-15 17:29:03 UTC
I can't remember! But since then, there have been at least two releases
and the guide has been hugely expanded. Hoorah.

I can't find one or two bits about using gconf in there, but with the
size of it these days, I probably just missed it. If I don't find the bits
I wanted, I know how to submit a patch :)
