Re-assigning to the l10n component, unless there is some reason to
believe that this is not a translation bug?

I'll send a mail about this to the zh_CN translation team and ask them
to have a look at this.

The translated PO is reviewed, and there is no "new folder" msgid, 
insteal there is "untitled folder" msgid which will be used as new 
created folder name.

It is confirmed that the translation is correct. It is translated 
as "δÃüÃûÎļþ¼Ð" (in GB2312). 

I think more information is needed, for example, the created 
filename 's byte sequences.

When I look at zh_TW.po and search for "untitled folder", I see:

#. localizers: the initial name of a new folder
#: libnautilus-private/nautilus-file-operations.c:2099
msgid "untitled folder"
msgstr "untitled folder"

So it looks like the string was not translated at all.

Christian, can you send an email to the zh_TW translation team instead
since the bug is in zh_TW.po and not zh_CN.po?

Brent, are you sure? The original bug report mentions simplified
Chinese, which is zh_CN (see http://www.gnome.org/i18n/).

Well, I could be wrong...that's always possible.  Perhaps the bug
occured in both langs and only zh_CN was fixed?

Anyway, I did a cvs checkout of Nautilus, and when I search for
"untitled" in po/zh_CN.po, I see:

But when I search for untitled in po/zh_TW.po, I see:

Are you seeing something different or am I missing something?

(Sorry, terribly late on this.)
I suspect that this has nothing to do with zh_TW translation at all,
as Brent noted, I used 'msgstr "untitled folder"' i.e. not translating
it into chinese at all, so default folders will appear in English.

I have checked the original bug report in redhat, and found that the
reporter is using 'Chinese edition' of RedHat -- specific to chinese
market only. And the person is from mainland China, using zh_CN
locale. So the zh_CN translation is more likely related to this bug.

But AFAIK RedHat uses it's custom translation in some of the releases,
so it would be better to check THAT particular RPM contained in Red
Hat Chinese editon, to see if it uses non UTF-8 encoding in translation.

Please change status to either NEEDINFO or INCOMPLETE, and redhat
people may want to check this in detail.

I can confirm the same bug for cs (Czech) translation too, so I don't
think it has anything to do with a translation.

The msgstr is definitely in Unicode, but the new folder name seems not
to be. The title of the new folder is displayed as if it was in
ISO-8859-1, I get double chars where accentuated chars are expected
(ASCII chars are OK).

In short, the new title looks as if you display a Unicode string in
non-Unicode capable viewer/way.

Could anyone try to reproduce this with the latest version of Nautilus
(2.1.5 or newer)?

I can confirm this to be happening on Nautilus 2.1.91.

I think this is the same as bug 102968 -which I recently
reported and attached a patch in.

Reassigning to nautilus since this, based on the comments, doesn't
seem to be a bug in translations.
