Description Seth Nickell 2002-08-04 21:08:14 UTC
If the computer is plugged into the wall:
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 100% (High)" "Battery is fully charged".
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 90% (High)", "Battery is 90% charged".
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 10% (Low)", "Battery is 10% charged"

If the computer is running off battery:
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 100% (High)", "100% battery charge remains"
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 90% (High"), "90% battery charge remains"
 - Rather than e.g. "Battery: 10% (Low)", "10% battery charge remains
(almost empty!)"
Comment 1 Luis Villa 2002-08-05 20:09:55 UTC
isn't the 'battery' part all implied by it being the battstat applet?
i.e., wouldn't just '90% charged' or '90% charge remains' be better?
Comment 2 Seth Nickell 2002-08-06 05:16:07 UTC
I waffled. It probably is obvious, but I decided to err on the
conservative side. Either way would be just fine with me.

Having tooltips be pretty explicit isn't necessarily a bad thing. For
example, somebody could genuinely wonder what that weird green thing
on their panel is and not be using the tooltip for more detail on
charging but to actually find out what the heck "that this is". So in
some sense, this tooltip is combining "what is that?" information with
"quick access to more detail" information.

string freeze is very close, are we going to do this or wait
till 2.7 ?
Comment 4 Pedro Corte-Real 2004-03-12 19:10:39 UTC
Could we get the estimated time remaining before full charge or empty
battery in there as well? ACPI provides that and I'm sick of opening a
terminal to look it up.
Comment 5 Danielle Madeley 2004-05-20 17:34:43 UTC
Time remaining calculations are in CVS now.

I have to admit, I like the idea of a more sentence like way of giving battery
information:
"Battery is at 98%, 2 hours 55 minutes remaining"

huge string change for the battery applet

This changes just about every string in the battery applet to have what I think
is more natural language.
Comment 7 Kevin Vandersloot 2004-08-01 20:08:07 UTC
Davyd: we should have a translator look at your patch. I think they don't want
markup like "%d" etc in translated strings and there is also ngettext for plurals
Comment 8 Christian Rose 2004-08-05 17:13:24 UTC
%d is fine, just <b> markup is bad. :)

Davyd has asked for help on the translation mailing list
(http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2004-August/msg00044.html), and is
currently incorporating the improvement suggestions into his patch. I assume he
will present an updated patch here once he's done.
Comment 9 Kevin Vandersloot 2004-08-06 14:27:40 UTC
Great. Thanks everybody!

I have approval from the release team to break UI freeze with this patch. The
i18n have gone quiet. I'm posting this here as a last chance for someone to
tell me there is something wrong with it.

This has landed.
