Comment 1 Aschwin van der Woude 2002-11-17 12:13:43 UTC
I dragged a cdrom-icon to a location-field, and it then tries to show
the desktop file. The same happens with the trash-can.
I tested this with 2.1.2
Comment 2 Tim Herold 2004-05-09 13:12:12 UTC
Hmm. This is a bit weired. In 2.6.1 dragging a normal folder or symlink from the
desktop into the location bar works, but trying with a volume shows e.g.
x-nautilus-desktop:///CD-ROM.volume in the location bar but the folder/file view
shows my home dir. Trying anything from computer:// just gives an error message
('Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying the file')

Retitling and bumping version.
Comment 3 Kjartan Maraas 2005-01-03 15:58:59 UTC
Is this still a problem in 2.8.x/2.9.x? I can't reproduce here because I just
have an internal HD and no removable media...
Comment 4 Sebastien Bacher 2005-05-22 12:25:19 UTC
still an issue with 2.11

Proposed patch (against HEAD).

I've also submitted the patch to the nautilus mailing list [1] for review.

Proposed patch #2

Also handles desktop icon files and the case where the activation URI does not
correspond to a valid file.

Comment 8 Cosimo Cecchi 2008-01-18 19:15:00 UTC
This is still valid with 2.21.5.
Dragging a volume from the desktop shows "x-nautilus-desktop:///foovolume" in the location entry.
Comment 9 Allan Day 2010-06-24 08:35:01 UTC
Changing component as a part of ongoing bug reorganisation work.
Comment 10 André Klapper 2011-08-19 11:39:14 UTC
Still valid in 3.1.4 and fallback mode.

Proposed patch #2

src/nautilus-window-manage-views.c does not exist anymore in git master. Hence setting 'needs-rework' as patch does not apply cleanly.
Comment 12 António Fernandes 2018-01-02 18:51:04 UTC
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
