maybe related to bug 80387?  I can't see this problem at all in the 
GNOME2 port.  Maybe distribution specific?

I don't see how it could be distribution-specific. Perhaps an X server
bug. Dunno.

I also cannot reproduce this. I could blame a dodgy GConf schema
install but same-gnome handles invalid tiles, and well... Havoc is
involved :)

Feel free to re-open if anyone else can reproduce this, but I'm
getting an X bug. Declaring this INVALID as I can't find anything
along the lines of "cannot reproduce".
