GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 86532
Unable to resize or move icons using the keyboard
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:48:34 UTC
I can move desktop icons around the desktop icons around the desktop using the mouse but there does not seem to be a way to do it using just the keyboard.
Reducing severity as Calum has noted that a well known operating system does not support this either.
Which isn't to say we shouldn't go one better than them, of course :) Perhaps more important is the fact that you can't resize icons on the desktop or in a Nautilus icon view using only the keyboard, updating summary accordingly.

Oops, it's not 90219 that's the duplicate, it's 90220...

moving to GNOMEVER2.3
Updating status_whiteboard field to reflect A11Y team's assessment of accessibility impact.
When somebody looks at this, would suggest that good shortcuts to use for 'move' and 'resize' would be Alt+F7 and Alt+F8, the default window (and now panel) move and resize shortcuts. Might just want to hardcode them rather than tying them into the actual keys chosen in the keyboard shortcut prefs, though.
Apologies for spam... marking as GNOMEVER2.3 so it appears on the official GNOME bug list :)

Is this ever likely to happen? Somebody on the accessibility mailing list needed this feature today, which just reminded me about it!
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
