I've thought about this functionality, same for hiding the TOC-tree in the Content-view.
I agree that this is worth doing. Perhaps a corner "x" or something? Did you have any other suggestion for how to do it, Shaun?
The index side panel is gone in Yelp 2.5.0, and it's not returning. A new search interface will appear, once the new search infastructure is in place.
