GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 85784
on login, desktop covers windows
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
I've added ssh-add (the GNOME frontend) to my manual startup programs. This program does a keyboard grab for security reasons. Anyway, I'm halfway done typing my passphrase when nautilus maps its desktop background on top of this window (which still, of course, has the keyboard grab). I have to continue typing blind and hit return to be able to use my desktop normally.
Created attachment 9299 [details] [review] Patch to call gdk_window_lower after mapping
greg please email your patch to nautilus-list@gnome.org so that it can get attention from the developers. thanks setting priority to high cuz of the patch
Actually, I don't think I will. We have bugzilla here and maintainers should be keeping track of bugs in their products. I'm not going to support irresponsibility.
Dave: can you take a look at this? Greg: you're being stubborn and (quite frankly) useless and irritating. All the nautilus maintainers are volunteers working in their spare time; anything they've requested to make their lives simpler (like mailing patches to nautilus-list to separate patches out from the literally /hundreds/ of bug emails they recieve in a given week) we should do.
Looks ok, please commit. And greg, louie is right. Please send mail to the list if you want us to look at a patch (a lot of people just send a small note mentioning that they've attached a patch to a bug). It's not a lot of effort, and it will speed up the review process.
Patch committed. Changing state to RESOLVED FIXED. Noted in ChangeLog entry: A window manager can deny gdk_window_lower, but nothing reasonable can be done about that. (Further comments on process reserved for private email, later.)
Running nautilus 2.0.8 (from Debian unstable), which does have this patch applied, I still get the desktop covering the ssh-askpass window, exactly as described in the original report. If I turn off nautilus' drawing of the desktop, then no trouble befalls me. WM is metacity. Is metacity the weak link here, maybe, given the WM comment above?
Is this still the same with later versions?
Metacity should prevent this in recent version since the desktop window should be shown in the bottom background layer. Any news? regs, Chris
closing, we'll see if someone reopens it.
