GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 81610
List view should macos style list view.
Last modified: 2005-07-14 18:14:47 UTC
macos has a really nice combination list/tree view. It's really nice and easy to use. It would be nice to turn the nautilus list view into a macos style list view.
I personally tend to dislike the OS/X list view, though I'm not a huge fan of nautilus's either. I wish I could pinpoint why, though. Maybe I'll play with it tomorrow before my brother takes back his Ti. :)
I like both the Mac Outliner (Details, Tree) and Browser (columns) views and would love to have them in Nautilus. (And clean up the rest too. ;-)
Moving this off to "future" since there's been no recent discussion or action.
This looks like bug 96239.
No bug 96239 is a request for NEXT style column list, this is a request for macos 9 style list view.

what's the difference between the next and macos modes ?
The NeXT or MacOSX mode that people are requesting is a "columns" view. The browser is divided into about 2-5 vertical columns (you can add/remove them), in theory there can be any number of columns, with a horizontal scroll bar at the bottom for all of them. Each column has its own vertical scroll bar and displays a listing of a directory. Initially only the first column is filled. When you select a directory (by clicking) in that first column, the second column is filled with a listing for that directory, etc. This is a very efficient way of browsing for many tasks (I find it especially useful for reorganizing files). Additionally, in MacOS X, if you select a file (non-directory), details of that file and a preview are displayed in the next free column. (Though the sidebar in Nautilus performs a similar function). Mac OS 9 does not have a browsing mode like this, AFAIK. The Macos-style list view is now implemented in nautilus.
